Guide to gun holster choosingπŸ”

Choosing the right gun holster is crucial for the safe and effective carry of your firearm. Here’s a practical guide to help you select the best holster for your needs:

➑️ Determine Your Purpose: Understand why you need a holster. Is it for concealed carry, open carry, range use, or competition shooting? Your purpose will influence the type of holster you should consider.
➑️ Know Your Firearm: Ensure that you know the make and model of your firearm, such as your Glock 26, as holsters are often designed specifically for particular guns.
➑️ Consider Carry Method: Decide on your preferred carry method. Common options include inside-the-waistband (IWB), outside-the-waistband (OWB), shoulder holsters, ankle holsters, and pocket holsters. The carry method should align with your purpose and comfort.
➑️ Concealment vs. Open Carry: If you plan to carry concealed, choose a holster designed for concealment. These are typically smaller, more discreet, and designed to prevent printing (showing the outline of the firearm through clothing).
➑️ Retention Level: Determine the level of retention you’re comfortable with. Some holsters have adjustable retention systems that allow you to customize the tightness of the fit.
➑️ Material: Consider the material of the holster. Common options include leather, Kydex, nylon, and hybrids. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of durability, comfort, and retention.
➑️ Comfort and Fit: The holster should be comfortable to wear for extended periods. Look for features like padded backing, sweat guards, and adjustable positions to maximize comfort.
➑️ Compatibility: Ensure that the holster is specifically designed for your firearm model (e.g., Glock 26). An ill-fitting holster can be dangerous.
➑️ Attachment Method: Consider how the holster attaches to your belt or clothing. Common methods include belt loops, clips, and paddle attachments. Choose what works best for your needs.

πŸ“Œ Remember that choosing the right holster is a personal decision, and what works for one person may not work for another. Take the time to try different holsters, practice with them, and prioritize safety above all else when carrying a firearm.

πŸ”Ά Pros: πŸ”Ά Cons:
🟣 Inside-the-Waistband (IWB):

βœ”οΈ IWB holsters keep the firearm tucked inside your pants, making it highly concealable.

βœ”οΈ They minimize the outline of the gun, reducing the chances of others noticing you’re armed.

βœ”οΈ Many find these holsters comfortable, especially with padded or breathable designs.

βœ”οΈ IWB holsters often offer excellent firearm retention.

βœ”οΈ Can be less comfortable when sitting for long periods.

βœ”οΈ May require larger clothing sizes for proper concealment.

βœ”οΈ Slower draw compared to some other positions.

🟣 Outside-the-Waistband (OWB):

βœ”οΈ OWB holsters offer quick and easy access to your firearm.

βœ”οΈ They can be comfortable for those who prefer an unconcealed carry style.

βœ”οΈ These holsters don’t require larger clothing sizes for concealment.

βœ”οΈ OWB holsters are less discreet and may not be suitable for concealed carry.

βœ”οΈ They can print through clothing, especially in tight or thin fabrics.

βœ”οΈ In some areas, open carry with such holster may be subject to specific regulations.

🟣 Appendix Carry:

βœ”οΈ The appendix carry position allows for a quick and efficient draw.

βœ”οΈ It’s easier to conceal a firearm in front of the body.

βœ”οΈ Clothing naturally drapes over the front of the body, aiding concealment.

βœ”οΈ Some people find appendix carry uncomfortable, especially when sitting or bending.

βœ”οΈ The proximity of the firearm to sensitive areas requires extra attention to safety and trigger discipline.

🟣 Shoulder Holster:

βœ”οΈ With a jacket or coat, shoulder holsters can provide effective concealment.

βœ”οΈ Drawing from it can be slower than from other positions.

βœ”οΈ Accessing your firearm while sitting or in confined spaces can be challenging.

βœ”οΈ They don’t create bulges or print through clothing.

βœ”οΈ Drawing from an ankle holster takes more time and effort.

βœ”οΈ They are typically designed for smaller firearms.

βœ”οΈ Can be uncomfortable when moving or standing for long periods.

🟣 Pocket Holster:

βœ”οΈ These holsters allow for very discreet carry, especially in loose-fitting pants or jackets.

βœ”οΈ They don’t create noticeable printing through clothing.

βœ”οΈ Pocket holsters are suitable for smaller, compact firearms.

βœ”οΈ Drawing from it can be slower than from other positions.

βœ”οΈ Accessing the firearm may be restricted when sitting or in tight spaces.

❗ Experiment with different positions, practice drawing, and prioritize safety and comfort when selecting a carry position and holster. Additionally, be aware of local laws and regulations regarding concealed carry and open carry to ensure compliance.

FAQ 😎

How to store the holster when not in use?

✍️ Storing your holster properly when it’s not in use is important to maintain its shape, functionality, and longevity. Here are some tips on how to store your holster:

  • ⭐️ Clean the Holster: Before storing your holster, ensure it’s clean and free of debris. Wipe it down with a clean, dry cloth to remove any dirt, sweat, or residue from your firearm.
  • ⭐️ Unload the Firearm: If the holster contains a firearm, make sure the firearm is unloaded, with no ammunition in the chamber or magazine.
  • ⭐️ Remove Any Attachments: If your holster has attachments like spare magazine pouches or other accessories, consider removing them for storage. This can help prevent unnecessary stress on the holster.
  • ⭐️ Maintain Proper Shape: Store the holster in a way that helps it retain its shape. Avoid folding or crumpling it, as this can cause damage or deformations.
  • ⭐️ Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Store the holster in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Prolonged exposure to heat or direct sunlight can damage the materials and affect the holster’s performance.
  • ⭐️ Use a Holster Rack or Hanger: Consider using a holster rack or hanger to keep the holster in an upright and easily accessible position. This can help maintain its shape and allow for quick access when needed.
  • ⭐️ Keep it Dry: Ensure the holster is completely dry before storing it. Moisture can lead to mold, mildew, or corrosion, especially in leather holsters.
  • ⭐️ Rotate Holsters: If you have multiple holsters, consider rotating them periodically to prevent prolonged compression and stress on any single holster.
  • ⭐️ Regularly Inspect: Periodically check stored holsters for any signs of damage, wear, or deterioration. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
  • ⭐️ Store in a Safe Location: If you have small children or others who should not have access to firearms or holsters, store them in a secure location, such as a locked gun safe or cabinet.
  • ⭐️ Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Some holsters come with specific care and storage instructions from the manufacturer. Follow these guidelines for the best results.

πŸ“Œ Properly storing your holster when not in use can help extend its lifespan and ensure it remains in good condition for when you need it. Regular maintenance and care are essential to keep your holster functioning reliably and safely.

How often should clean the holster?

βœ’οΈ The frequency with which you should clean your holster depends on how often you use it and the conditions it’s exposed to. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine when to clean your holster:

  • πŸ” Regular Maintenance: It’s a good practice to perform basic maintenance and cleaning of your holster periodically, even if you don’t use it frequently. Depending on usage, a simple wipe-down and inspection every few weeks or once a month should suffice.
  • πŸ” After Each Use: If you use your holster regularly, especially in hot and humid conditions, or if you sweat while carrying, it’s advisable to clean it after each use. Sweat and moisture can lead to the buildup of dirt and residue.
  • πŸ” When Dirty or Soiled: If your holster becomes visibly dirty or soiled with dirt, sweat, or other contaminants, clean it immediately. Leaving dirt and sweat to accumulate can lead to premature wear and potential damage to the holster’s materials.
  • πŸ” When the Firearm is Cleaned: If you clean your firearm, consider inspecting and cleaning the holster at the same time. This ensures that both your firearm and holster are in good working condition.
  • πŸ” If Stored for an Extended Period: If you’re storing the holster for an extended period without use, it’s a good idea to clean it before storage. This helps prevent the buildup of contaminants and ensures it’s ready for use when needed.

⏰ When cleaning your holster, follow these steps:

  1. πŸ’§ Unload your firearm and ensure it’s in a safe condition.
  2. πŸ’§ Remove any attachments or accessories from the holster, such as spare magazine pouches.
  3. πŸ’§ Wipe down the holster with a clean, dry cloth to remove surface dirt and sweat.
  4. πŸ’§ If necessary, use a damp cloth or a mild, non-abrasive cleaner suitable for the holster’s material to clean any stubborn stains or residue.
  5. πŸ’§ Allow the holster to air dry thoroughly before reassembling it or storing it.
  6. πŸ’§ Regularly inspect the holster for signs of wear, loose stitching, or any damage that may affect its functionality and safety.

❗ Remember that proper maintenance and cleaning of your holster not only ensures its longevity but also contributes to safe and reliable firearm handling. Always follow the manufacturer’s care and cleaning instructions for your specific holster model if available.

Is a gun safe in a holster?

🟦 A gun is generally considered safe when properly holstered, provided that the holster is designed for the specific firearm and is used by safety guidelines and best practices. Here are some key points to consider regarding the safety of a gun in a holster:

  • πŸ’£ Trigger Guard Protection: One of the primary safety functions of a holster is to cover and protect the trigger guard of the firearm. A well-designed holster should completely encase the trigger area, preventing any unintended contact with the trigger. This protection minimizes the risk of an accidental discharge while the firearm is holstered.
  • πŸ’£ Retention Mechanisms: Many holsters feature retention mechanisms that securely hold the firearm in place. These mechanisms, which can include friction, thumb breaks, or strap retention, add an extra layer of security to prevent the gun from falling out of the holster.
  • πŸ’£ Proper Holster Fit: It’s essential to ensure that the holster is specifically designed for the firearm model you intend to carry. A proper fit is crucial to maintain proper trigger guard protection and retention.
  • πŸ’£ Correct Holster Positioning: Proper holster positioning, whether inside-the-waistband (IWB), outside-the-waistband (OWB), appendix carry, or other methods, contributes to safe carry. The firearm should be holstered in a way that minimizes the risk of unintended exposure or contact.
  • πŸ’£ Holster Condition: Regularly inspect and maintain your holster to ensure it remains in good condition. Check for signs of wear, loose stitching, or other issues that could affect its safety and functionality.
  • πŸ’£ Holster Draw Practice: Practicing your draw from the holster is essential for firearm safety. Ensure you follow the four fundamental rules of firearm safety during practice: treat every firearm as if it is loaded, keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to shoot, and know your target and what is beyond it.
  • πŸ’£ Holster Training: If you’re new to holster use or have a new holster, seek proper training from a qualified instructor to learn how to safely and effectively draw and holster your firearm.

βœ’οΈ While holsters are designed to enhance firearm safety, it’s crucial to remember that the ultimate responsibility for firearm safety rests with the user. Always follow the basic principles of firearm safety, familiarize yourself with your specific holster, and practice safe handling and storage of your firearm.

Does the color of your holster matter?

πŸ“’ The color of your holster is primarily a matter of personal preference and style, and it typically does not impact the holster’s functionality or safety. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind when choosing the color of your holster:

  • 🧩 Concealment: If you plan to carry your firearm concealed, the color of your holster can play a role in how well it blends with your clothing. For example, if you typically wear dark clothing, a black or dark-colored holster may be less likely to print (show the outline of the firearm through your clothing). Conversely, if you wear light-colored clothing, a lighter or tan holster may be more discreet.
  • 🧩 Tactical Considerations: Some individuals who use firearms for tactical or law enforcement purposes may prefer holsters in subdued or tactical colors like black, coyote tan, or olive drab green. These colors can complement their overall gear and attire.
  • 🧩 Personal Style: Many holsters are available in a variety of colors, including black, brown, gray, green, and more. Some people choose a holster color that matches their personal style or preference.
  • 🧩 Visibility: In some cases, having a brightly colored or contrasting holster can make it easier to locate and access your firearm, especially in low-light conditions.
  • 🧩 Legal Considerations: In some jurisdictions, there may be regulations or laws regarding the color or appearance of holsters, especially for law enforcement or security personnel. Be aware of any such requirements if they apply to your situation.

πŸ˜‰ Ultimately, the color of your holster is a matter of personal choice and does not significantly impact the holster’s function or safety. The most important factors when selecting a holster are its fit for your specific firearm, retention mechanisms, comfort, and compatibility with your intended use (e.g., concealed carry, open carry, competition shooting). Choose a holster color that suits your preferences and needs while ensuring you prioritize safety and functionality.

What are the levels of holsters?

πŸ”₯ Holster retention levels refer to the mechanisms or systems designed to secure a firearm in the holster. These retention levels vary in complexity and security, and they are often used in law enforcement and security contexts to indicate the level of security provided by a holster. Here are the common levels of holsters:

  • βŒ›οΈ Level 0 Holster (No Retention): Such holsters do not have any active retention mechanisms. The firearm is held in the holster solely by friction and gravity. These holsters provide the least amount of security and are often used in casual or competition settings where quick access to the firearm is a priority.
  • βŒ›οΈ Level I Holster (Passive Retention): These holsters have passive retention systems that use friction or tension to secure the firearm. Examples include molded or adjustable tension screws that provide some resistance when drawing the firearm. These holsters offer a basic level of security while allowing for a relatively fast draw.
  • βŒ›οΈ Level II Holster (Active Retention): They have active retention mechanisms in addition to passive retention. These mechanisms often include thumb breaks or hoods that must be disengaged before the firearm can be drawn. Level II holsters provide a higher level of security against unauthorized access to the firearm.
  • βŒ›οΈ Level III Holster (Triple Retention): These holsters offer a high degree of security, often incorporating multiple retention mechanisms. In addition to passive and active retention, they may include a third mechanism such as a rotating hood or strap that further secures the firearm. Level III holsters are commonly used by law enforcement and in tactical environments.
  • βŒ›οΈ Level IV Holster (Quad Retention): Such holsters are designed for the highest level of security and are often used in high-risk or specialized law enforcement roles. They incorporate four or more retention mechanisms, which can include thumb breaks, hoods, rotating hoods, and other advanced systems.
  • βŒ›οΈ Level V Holster (Specialized): Some specialized holsters may go beyond the traditional levels and include advanced technologies or features to enhance security. These holsters are typically designed for specific applications or requirements.

πŸ“Œ It’s important to note that the presence of active retention mechanisms, such as thumb breaks or hoods, adds an extra layer of security but may also slightly slow down the draw. Additionally, ensure that you receive proper training and practice drawing from your chosen holster to maintain safety and proficiency.

I’ve been using an OWB Kydex holster at the 4-5 o’clock position, which I got from a local mom-and-pop shop. It’s been great for open carry, and quite comfortable, but I’m soon getting my Concealed Carry Permit (CCP), and I’m struggling to find the most comfortable option for all-around concealed carry. I’m 5’5″ and around 180 pounds (currently working on losing weight). When it comes to AIWB (Appendix Inside-the-Waistband) carry, it’s comfortable while standing, but not so much when I’m sitting, and I suspect it might be due to my setup. For IWB (Inside-the-Waistband) carry that’s not in the appendix position, I’ve found it to be comfortable, especially with a leather holster I picked up. I’d appreciate hearing your position preferences and any holster recommendations or insights into your concealed carry setups! Thanks!

I have a similar build, and I prefer to carry my G26 IWB at the 4 o’clock position. My holster of choice is the Comp-Tac MTAC IWB Hybrid Concealed Carry Holster. It’s been an excellent choice for me.

For an IWB (Inside-the-Waistband) holster for my Glock 26, I’ve come across two options that stand out: the Galco Kingtuk IWB Leather Holster and the Galco Inside The Pant Waistband Leather Holster. Both of these holsters are impressively well-made and come at an affordable price point. They offer a great combination of quality and affordability, making them attractive choices for carrying my Glock 26.

Hello! I’m in the process of researching holsters for my Glock 26 Gen 5, and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the multitude of options available. Considering my lean build at 6’2″ and 150 pounds, I’m particularly interested in a slimmer holster design. I’m willing to invest in a higher-quality holster that will last, so I’m not opposed to spending a bit more money on one. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I recently purchased my first DeSantis The Insider Leather IWB Holster for my Glock, and I love it. I highly recommend it. As someone who’s explored various holster options, I must warn you that it can become a bit of a rabbit hole. You may find yourself collecting quite a few holsters as you keep wanting to try different ones – at least, that’s been my experience.

I’ve made the decision to switch back to using a Glock after trying out the M&P for a while and also downsizing my firearm. Now, I need some recommendations for a good holster. Right now, I’m primarily on the hunt for a good appendix holster that conceals well and is comfortable enough not to be a pain. Second to that, I’m considering a pod hybrid holster. Ease of on/off is a must for me. Thanks a lot in advance for any recommendations!

I’ve been using the DeSantis Speed Scabbard Leather OWB Belt Holster to carry my Glock 26 for approximately four years, and I have to say it’s been an excellent choice. I have a lot of praise for this holster, and I’ve tested several other holsters that claim to be comparable, but none of them worked as well for me. Additionally, I’ve also got the same holster for my Glock 19 and Glock 43, and it’s performed consistently across all these models.
