Types ⏰

When it comes to buying a survival water distiller, there are numerous types available.

  • ⌛️ The most common type is the countertop distiller, which is designed to be used on a kitchen counter and has a relatively small capacity. These units use electricity to boil and vaporize water, which then condenses in a separate container.
  • ⌛️ Another popular option is the solar-powered distiller, which uses the power of the sun to evaporate and condense the water. This type of distiller can be placed in direct sunlight or set up inside an enclosed structure with enough ventilation for cooling.
  • ⌛️ A third type of unit is the portable distiller, which can be taken along on hikes or camping trips. These models typically require no electricity and tend to have larger capacities than their countertop counterparts.
  • ⌛️ Finally, some survivalists choose to make their homemade stills using simple tools found around the home or outdoors. While this method may take more time and effort than purchasing a ready-made unit, it can provide an effective way to purify drinking water without relying on electricity or other resources.

How do you distill water for survival?

🟪  Distilling water is a method commonly used for purifying water in survival situations. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • ❇️ Find a Heat Source: Look for a heat source such as a fire, stove, or any means to generate heat.
  • ❇️ Create a Collection Container: Find a heat-resistant container that can hold water and is safe to use in high-temperature environments. This will serve as the collection container for the distilled water.
  • ❇️ Prepare a Boiling Container: Take another container, preferably made of metal, to boil the water. It should have a smaller opening or a lid to capture the steam.
  • ❇️ Pour Water into the Boiling Container: Fill the boiling container with the water you want to purify. Leave some space at the top to prevent overflow during boiling.
  • ❇️ Position the Boiling Container: Place the boiling container on the heat source, ensuring a stable position. Make sure it is positioned in a way that allows the steam to escape.
  • ❇️ Connect the Boiling Container to the Collection Container: Connect the boiling container to the collection container using a heat-resistant tube or improvised setup. The tube should allow the steam to travel from the boiling container to the collection container.
  • ❇️ Boil the Water: Heat the water in the boiling container until it reaches its boiling point. The heat will cause the water to vaporize and produce steam.
  • ❇️ Collect the Steam: As the water boils, the steam will rise and travel through the tube or improvised setup to the collection container. The steam will condense back into the water, leaving behind impurities.
  • ❇️ Cool and Collect the Distilled Water: Once the steam has passed through the tube and condensed, it will collect in the collection container as purified, distilled water. Allow the distilled water to cool before using or storing it.
  • ❇️ Repeat the Process (Optional): If you have access to more water and need a larger quantity of distilled water, you can repeat the process as needed.
How long does it take to distill water?

📝 The process of distilling water can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours. Here are some factors that can affect the time:

  • ✔️ Heat Source: The type and intensity of the heat source used to boil the water can impact the distillation time. A stronger heat source will generally lead to faster boiling and steam production.
  • ✔️ Quantity of Water: The amount of water being distilled will affect the time required for the process. Larger quantities of water will take longer to heat up and produce steam compared to smaller volumes.
  • ✔️ The efficiency of Setup: The design and efficiency of the distillation setup can influence the time it takes to distill water. Factors such as the surface area of the boiling container, the length and diameter of the tubing used, and the effectiveness of the condensation process can all affect the speed of distillation.
  • ✔️ Environmental Conditions: Environmental factors like ambient temperature and humidity can impact the rate of steam production and condensation. Warmer temperatures generally facilitate faster distillation.

⏰ Considering these factors, it’s challenging to provide an exact time frame for water distillation. In a simple improvised setup, distilling a small quantity of water can take around 30 minutes to an hour. However, with more efficient and purpose-built distillation equipment, the process can be significantly faster.

What are the fastest ways to purify water?

☑️ When it comes to purifying water quickly, several methods can effectively remove contaminants. Here are some of the fastest ways:

  • 💧 Boiling: Boiling water is one of the quickest and easiest methods to purify it. Simply bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute (or three minutes at higher altitudes) to kill most microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
  • 💧 Water Purification Tablets: Water purification tablets, such as those containing chlorine or iodine, can rapidly disinfect water. Follow the instructions on the tablet packaging for the recommended dosage and waiting time.
  • 💧 Water Filters: Portable water filters with fine mesh or activated carbon can quickly remove sediment, bacteria, protozoa, and some viruses from water. These filters work by physically straining out contaminants or using chemical adsorption.
  • 💧 UV Water Purifiers: UV (Ultraviolet) water purifiers utilize ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate microorganisms in water. These devices are often handheld or portable and can treat water in seconds to minutes.
  • 💧 Chemical Disinfection: Chemicals like chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide can be used to disinfect water. Add the appropriate amount of bleach (typically 2 drops per liter) or hydrogen peroxide (about 10 drops per liter), stir well and wait for 30 minutes before consuming.
  • 💧 Distillation: While distillation is not the fastest method, it can be effective for producing purified water. By boiling water and collecting the condensed steam, distillation removes most contaminants, including heavy metals, chemicals, and pathogens.
Why is a distillation of water important?

➡️ Distillation of water is important for several reasons:

  • Removal of Impurities: Distillation is a highly effective method for removing impurities from water. Through the process of boiling and condensation, distillation separates water from contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, chemicals, minerals, and other dissolved solids. This results in purified water that is free from many harmful substances.
  • Pathogen Elimination: Distillation kills or removes most microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, that may be present in the water. This is particularly crucial in situations where the water source is contaminated and poses a risk of waterborne diseases.
  • Chemical and Heavy Metal Removal: Distillation can effectively remove various chemical contaminants, including pesticides, herbicides, industrial pollutants, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Additionally, heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, which can be harmful to human health, are left behind as the water vaporizes during distillation.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Distillation provides a viable option for purifying water during emergencies when clean water sources may be limited or contaminated. It offers a means of obtaining safe drinking water when other methods may not be readily available.
How is distilled water stored?

⌛️ Distilled water should be stored in a clean and airtight container to maintain its purity. Guidelines for storing distilled water:

  • 🔍 Choose the Right Container: Select a container specifically designed for storing water. Food-grade plastic containers, glass bottles, or stainless steel containers are commonly used. Avoid containers made of materials that can leach chemicals into the water.
  • 🔍 Clean and Sterilize the Container: Before storing distilled water, ensure that the container is thoroughly cleaned and sterilized. Wash it with mild soap and warm water, then rinse it well. Alternatively, you can sterilize the container by boiling it for a few minutes.
  • 🔍 Cool the Distilled Water: Allow the distilled water to cool completely before transferring it to the storage container. This helps prevent condensation and the growth of microorganisms inside the container.
  • 🔍 Fill the Container: Pour the distilled water carefully into the container, leaving a small amount of headspace at the top. This allows for expansion if the water freezes (if applicable) and provides room to tightly seal the container.
  • 🔍 Seal the Container: Ensure that the container is tightly sealed to prevent any contamination or evaporation. Use the cap, lid, or closure provided with the container, and check for a proper seal.
  • 🔍 Label and Date the Container: It is helpful to label the container with the date of storage. This helps keep track of the water’s freshness and enables proper rotation if storing multiple containers.
  • 🔍 Store in a Cool, Dark Place: Place the sealed container in a cool, dark location away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Exposure to sunlight and high temperatures can degrade the quality of the water over time.

Conclusion 😉

I believe the main reason water is considered a valuable commodity is not because of its scarcity, but rather the lack of easily accessible potable water. Given enough time, energy, chemicals, and tools, almost any water can be made drinkable. However, there are a few important considerations. Firstly, distilled water is not ideal for drinking purposes. In emergencies where no other options are available, it can be consumed with some food in the stomach. Distilled water has various other uses as well, but for most people’s needs, buying a gallon or two from a store at a low cost would suffice. Secondly, boiling water does not guarantee the removal of all contaminants, including volatile organic compounds that have similar boiling points to the water. Unless you address this issue specifically, such contaminants will remain in the water even after boiling.

In my opinion, distillation is often unnecessary and yields a relatively small amount of water compared to other purification methods. It should primarily be reserved for situations where the water is contaminated or comes from sources like saltwater or urine. In most cases, pasteurization is a practical choice. By heating the water to a temperature of at least +149°F or +65°C and holding it at that temperature for one minute, I can effectively kill harmful pathogens. Alternatively, a full boil at 212°F or 100°C is also an excellent method.
