What are survival saws? 🤔

They also referred to as folding saws, are lightweight and compact tools that can be used in a variety of situations. The most common uses for such saws include cutting through branches and limbs, trimming hardwood trees and logs, or creating firewood.

Survival saws

Features ✍️

Survival saws are a must-have tool for any outdoors enthusiast, offering convenience and versatility in a small package. Often smaller than traditional saws, they can easily be carried with you on hikes or camping trips, so you’ll always have the right tool for the job. Here are some of the features:

  • ❇️ Blade Material: It is crucial for both safety and efficiency. Most models are made from high-carbon steel, which is durable and effective at cutting through wood.
  • ❇️ Size: Size is an important factor when selecting a saw; smaller blades may be easier to carry but they may not be strong enough to handle tough tasks. On the other hand, larger blades can be too bulky and difficult to carry in your pack.
  • ❇️ Blade Shape: The shape of the blade affects its cutting performance; some saws feature straight blades while others have more curved or serrated edges.
  • ❇️ Teeth Design: Different blade shapes have different tooth designs, which affect their performance. Some saws feature fine teeth for precise work, while others have aggressive teeth designed for heavy-duty work.
  • ❇️ Handle Design: It is another important factor, as it determines how comfortable and secure you’ll be while using the saw. Look for a handle that fits your hand securely and has a good grip so that you can confidently use the tool without worrying about slipping or losing control.

Benefits 🤩

Survival saws can be an incredibly useful tool to have in any survival or emergency. Its portability and durability make it a great choice for anyone looking to build a reliable emergency kit.

  • ⭐️ The curved and serrated blades of the saw make it ideal for cutting through thick vegetation or cutting down small trees. Plus, they are usually lightweight and easy to carry around, making them an essential part of any outdoor activity kit.
  • ⭐️ For those who want ultimate functionality from their tools, there’s nothing more convenient than having a multi-purpose saw that doubles up as both a pruning tool and an emergency weapon if needed (e.g., self-defense).
  • ⭐️ Furthermore, many models are designed with extra features such as adjustable tension settings which allow you to adjust the blade tension according to whichever material you’re cutting into at the time.
  • ⭐️ Last but not least, when it comes to safety protocols – many manufacturers include safety locks that prevent accidental blade openings while being carried around in your pack or pocket which is especially important if you plan on carrying it around with you in public places such as hiking trails or forests.

Benefits of survival saws

Types ⌛️

There are many types of survivals available, ranging from simple and lightweight folding saws to heavy-duty chain saws.

  • 💣 Folding saws are designed to break down into smaller pieces for easy storage and transport, making them the ideal choice for backpackers or those looking for a more compact tool. These saws usually feature a single blade with serrated teeth that can be easily resharpened.
  • 💣 Chain saws are the go-to choice for heavier tasks like cutting logs or branches. They feature a motorized chain that runs along a guide bar, allowing you to quickly cut through thick pieces of wood. While they’re more powerful than folding saws, they’re also bulkier and harder to transport.
  • 💣 You might also want to look into bow saws if portability is your top priority. Bow saws feature an adjustable frame and blade system with a cable tensioner for quick blade swaps and easy resizing. They’re highly efficient at cutting straight lines in small logs but are less effective on thicker pieces of wood.

1# Sportsman Pocket Chainsaw

#1 Sportsman Pocket Chainsaw 36 Inch Long Chain

This is the cutting blade of a conventional chainsaw to which the handles are attached. The mechanism of operation is very simple – grab the tree with this saw (cutting teeth to the tree) and pull the handles with your left and right hand. This chain is also serviced like a conventional chainsaw chain. After long-term storage or before use, try to clean the saw from corrosion with WD-40 and lubricate it with 3 in 1 universal oil. After use, clean the sawdust from the wood with a rag and brush (an old toothbrush will do). If you follow these simple rules – this saw (in excellent condition) can be passed on to the great-grandchildren.

What do you need to know about the flaws? Each side bend threatens a broken chain – be careful! Working with this saw can replace a trip to the fitness center and requires good endurance. This saw has a cutting edge on only 1 side. If you tie extension ropes to the handles and clasp a branch at a height, the correct rotation of the saw to the tree may take some time. To cope with this situation – free the saw from touching the branch, twist the rope so that it turns the saw in the right direction, and then gently pull the other end of the rope to return the saw to the branch. When you succeed, do the first few files without pressure to make a guide cut. Then you will succeed.

  • Thick 36-inch chain (longer than competitors)
  • Cuts 3″ branches in 10 seconds
  • Double-sided sharpening cuts in 3 directions and self-cleans
  • Convenient cross-stitched handles
  • Includes durable nylon case with front latch and belt loops (3 x 3 x 1 1/2 inches)
  • Can be sharpened using a conventional 5/32 circular saw
  • Lifetime warranty and full refund (if you do not like it)
  • An additional gift – a magnesium fire starter with a diameter of 8 mm
  • Good customer support
  • Made in China (professional chainsaw manufacturer)
  • There is no instruction for use and care (the seller sends electronically after a request)
  • Cutting edge only on 1 side (like a chainsaw)
  • Not self-sharpening

2# Agawa Canyon Boreal21 Folding Bow Saw

Agawa Canyon - BOREAL21 Folding Bow Saw

This saw is as light, compact, and durable as possible. It folds to the size of the cutting blade (21″) but completely covers aggressive teeth. The turning mechanism is designed so that you do not need to touch the cutting blade and the saw is pulled by itself in just a few seconds. The handle is designed as a latch that securely fixes the blade and is quite comfortable. The only wish is to wear gloves so that the skin of the hand does not suffer from the details of the handle. If you are engaged in wood processing – this saw may not suit you. Automatic blade tension eliminates unnecessary stress but does not give an even cut. During operation with this saw, the blade can bend in an arc or change the angle of the cut. This is important for responsible work with wood but does not play a role when working in the garden or on a camping trip. With this saw, any tourist adventure will be much more carefree, and an emergency tool kit is much more effective.

Video review

  • All stainless steel elements, hardened and coated saw blades
  • The convenient and easy turning mechanism
  • Automatic blade tension without loose parts
  • Length (21 inches / 53 cm) Weight (17 ounces / 480 g)
  • High clearance anodized aluminum frame for large diameter cuts

  • You can replace the original blade (in case of breakage) with any standard 21″ blade (Agawa Canyon Inc. sells 4 different blades on its website)
  • Manufacturing Canada
  • Amazon choice
  • To protect the hand from the handle latch – be sure to wear gloves
  • Weak blade tension may make the cut uneven
  • Aggressive blade requires caution

3# Coghlan’s Folding Saw

Coghlan's Folding Saw

This lightweight aluminum folding 21″ saw from Coghlans weighs just 16 ounces. It’s a good choice to complement camping gear or use in the garden to cut branches. When folded, it is a compact small cane that is only slightly larger than the size of the cutting blade itself. Note: 2 spare saws can also be stored inside the Folding Saw, but they are not included in the kit. They need to be bought separately. The triangular shape of the frame limits the maximum size of the tree trunk for cutting. Every new inch reduces the stroke of the saw, which may cause some inconvenience and limitations. Before you take this saw on a hike – check it in practice. Most Amazon customers say plastic mounts are unreliable. To avoid unpleasant situations on a camping trip – replace the plastic hinge for mounting the blade. Aluminum will do the job. During storage in the car trunk, an unsecured blade inside the chassis may rattle. It is also easy to fix on your own, but a Canadian manufacturer could take care and do it.

  • Amazon choice
  • Aluminum handle, lever, and hinge plastic (but look durable)
  • You can replace the original blade (in case of breakage) with any standard 21″ blade
  • Durable anodized aluminum may contain additional blades
  • Compact folding saw (weighs only 16 ounces)
  • Made in Canada
  • Bad design for working with large logs (saw travel decreases every inch in depth)
  • Fragile plastic hinges (metal would be a better choice)
  • The blade is not tough enough to cut smoothly (with more tension, plastic parts break)
  • The blade-holding bolt was held by a fragile key ring
  • May expose you to chemicals, including TDI (more info at

4# The Friendly Swedee Folding Hand Saw with Ergonomic TPR Handle

The Friendly Swedee Folding Hand Saw with Ergonomic TPR Handle and 8-Inch Blade

A small folding saw by The Friendly Swede fits easily in your pocket and weighs only 9 ounces. It will help to restore order in the garden and to prepare firewood for your evening by the fire. The sharp blade and soft handle make everyday work a pleasant and exciting process. With each new cut branch, excitement and pride wake up “Can I cut this 3-inch branch in 10 seconds?” Be prepared that this saw will take all your strength, but will do a great job. This saw is more suitable for women and children than for strong men. A thin blade from strong impulses may bend and the latch will break. It’s not scary – the manufacturer will replace or just send you another saw. To do this, write to the support team and they will solve your problem at any time 24/7.

Video review

  • Suitable for green and dry wood (as well as plastic and bone)
  • The total length of the saw is 17 inches, the blade is 8 inches (when folded, 9 x 2.2 inches)
  • Made of 65Mn steel and has 7 teeth per inch (TPI)
  • The handle is made of thermoplastic rubber
  • + 2 parts x 27.5″ PARACORD
  • Safe lock on disclosure
  • Lifetime warranty
  • 24/7 Support Service (
  • Designed in Sweden
  • Amazon choice
  • Made in China
  • Short stroke no more than 7-8″

5# Corona RS 7245 Razor Tooth Folding Saw

Corona RS 7245 Razor Tooth Folding Saw, 7-Inch Curved Blade

A small folding saw for garden design or camping use. Lightweight for a hand tool is very important. With a length of 8″ this saw weighs only 4.8 ounces, which will not be visible in your luggage or pocket. Aggressive sharp teeth and a chrome-plated blade allow you to cut quickly, evenly, and cleanly branches of small and medium size (up to 4″). The handle is made in the “pistol” style for greater stability during operation. The lock should prevent the blade from opening on its own and cause damage. That’s just the spectacular design that ruined the functionality. When closed, there is a 1/4” gap between the teeth of the blade and the handle – enough to cut or tear adjacent items in the bag. The blade is very sharp and looks beautiful. It would be much better if the manufacturer paid more attention to quality control, rather than design. Impulse hardening loses its sharpness after several days of intensive work, and a semi-rigid blade with a flimsy handle needs to be carefully and carefully used. This may be a good choice for rare garden use, but not for long survival in the forest.

Video review

  • SK5 – 7″ Japanese High Carbon Steel Blade (Up to 6 Teeth Per Inch)
  • Grinding each tooth from 3 sides and impulse hardening for long-lasting sharpness
  • Clean and even cut
  • Chrome blade (protection against corrosion and better glide)
  • Disclosure lock
  • Ergonomic pistol grip
  • 3 sizes available
  • Weight – 4.8 oz.
  • Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • Made in Mexico
  • For branches no more than 4″
  • The blade is semi-rigid, not hard
  • Requires a better locknut for the blade-holding bolt
  • When closed, there is a 1/4″ gap between the blade teeth and the handle

6# Fiskars Folding Saw

Fiskars 7 Inch Folding Saw

This small and compact 7-inch folding hardened stainless steel saw is from the company – Fiskars. The orange handle with a soft pad allows you to comfortably and firmly hold it in your hand. The blade is folded into the handle and securely locked in the folded and unfolded position with a latch. This saw is designed to cut branches and small trees. It will become a good helper in the garden and camping, remaining small and invisible during storage. But on this, all its advantages unfortunately end. The manufacturer does not monitor the quality at all, so a lot of buyers are disappointed in this purchase. The brittle blade bends easily, and the coarse teeth do not bite into the tree as needed. It takes a lot of time and effort to cut branches over 2 inches. If your goal is an oak branch larger than 3 inches, the blade of the blade and patience will break earlier than this branch. This saw will do great with 1-inch branches, but no more. A dubious addition to a gardening tool or survival kit. But it can be useful if you want to give it to your opponent.

Video review

  • Amazon choice
  • Hardened steel blade (does not rust)
  • 7 inches long
  • Soft grip handle
  • The blade is folded into the handle and fixed in the folded and unfolded position
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Size – 10 x 1.2 x 3 inches, Weight – 5 ounces
  • China Production
  • No quality control
  • Well-sawed branch to 1 inch

#7 Yokepo Survival Pocket Chainsaw

YOKEPO Survival Pocket Chainsaw 3X Faster Hand Saw

This time we are faced with not just a compact chain saw, but a whole set for extreme survival. In a small bag for the belt is located: a high-carbon steel saw, a 2-meter rope woven into a neat bracelet with a whistle, and a flint¬¬stone for lighting a fire. Such a chainsaw easily copes even with large tree trunks or with branches at a height. To work with this saw, you need not only strong arms and shoulders but also a sense of control. If, when thrown onto a branch, the saw unfolds with the cutting side into the air, it will not work. But if he turns sideways, even weak pressure will break him, be careful. The seller did not talk much about his product, which suggests an idea – perhaps a product from China. The seller either does not know what he is selling or does not want to tell the truth. But the set itself is of good enough quality to take it for fishing and camping.

  • 16 teeth with 36″ chain length
  • Built of stainless steel 65 Mn
  • In a set: a bag for a belt, a bracelet from (more) 2-meter rope, and flintstone.
  • 2 options
  • Actual manufacturer unknown
  • No instructions for use and care
  • Cutting edge only on 1 side (like a chainsaw)
  • Not self-sharpening

8# SJ Survival Saw Wire Saws Universal Saw Camping Saw

SJ Survival Saw Wire Saws Universal Saw Camping Saw

If you were looking for a small and light saw in the style of a “ninja” – you found it. This is a flexible wire saw for a survival kit. To use this saw is not necessary to be strong. If you have enough skills, this will be an excellent fitness exercise for arms and shoulders. First, insert two PVC pipes (or branches) into the holder rings. Such handles will reduce pressure on the fingers. The main thing is not to make too sharp a corner when sawing a branch or tree trunk. Try to spread your arms wide and pull alternately with your left and right hands. If this causes difficulty, there is another option. Find a branch similar to an arc and fix the ends of the saw to form a bow saw. This will work much easier, but you will have to tinker with the mount. It is not true to say that this saw is very effective in cutting branches. It depends more on the skills of the one who saws. This saw was created as a very easy addition to the emergency kit and we must admit – it copes well with its task.

  • Stainless Steel Wire Saw (72 cm / 27.6 in.)
  • Suitable for cutting: wood, plastic, rubber, soft metal, and other materials.
  • Included bag storage case
  • 3″ limbs can be cut in 5 minutes.
  • It can be used as a bowstring from a bent stick
  • When used improperly – sawing turns into hell
  • Rings press hard on fingers

9# Bahco 396-LAP Laplander Folding Saw

Bahco 396-LAP Laplander Folding Saw, 7-1/2 -Inch Blade, 7 TPI

More than 4,000 customers rated this saw 5 stars. Is she so good? This tool has found a middle ground between carpentry precision and tourist portability. This saw is designed to “hunt” dead trees. The cutting teeth are sharpened in 2 directions but do not have an aggressive attack, and the blade itself is only 1 mm thick. She can also cope with green trees without any problems, but it will be a little longer than specialized saws. Many advantages of this saw are crossed out by a cheap handle and an unreliable plastic blade retainer. Correcting this oversight of satisfied customers would be much more than 90%, but the Swedish manufacturer unsuccessfully saved money. The seller gives 4 choices with different configurations. The option with a signature knife can be a good gift for an outdoor enthusiast or gardener.

  • Folding saw with 7-1 / 2-inch blade (7 teeth per inch)
  • Teeth sharpened in 2 directions and hardened
  • Folded length 9″, total weight 7 ounces
  • For cutting green and dry wood, plastic, and bones
  • Rust and low friction coating
  • Two-component plastic handle with leather strap
  • Security lock to lock (lock as desired)
  • 4 options
  • Limited warranty
  • Made in Sweden
  • Goes without a shell
  • Short stroke
  • Sometimes the blade lock breaks (plastic button)
  • Flimsy grip

10# Bahco 10-24-23 Bow Saw with Ergo Handle

Bahco 10-24-23 Bow Saw with Ergo Handle, 24-Inch

Onion saw with Ergo handle, 24 inches – from Bahco. This seller also has other saws with different cutting lengths (21″, 24″, 30″) and a choice for green or dry wood. But we will talk with you about the 24″ saw for a green tree. This saw is made of stainless steel, which protects it from rust and corrosion. The arc is coated with impact-resistant enamel paint. The blade tension mechanism is clear and simple, so you can easily replace a new blade. A convenient handle with joint protection makes the sawing smooth and comfortable. The saw comes with a protective plastic cover for the blade, for safer storage. The blade is very sharp, even handling a 12-inch barrel in 15 to 30 minutes is incredible! And smaller branches and trunks from 3 to 6 inches will be cut like butter. The orange color of this saw will help you find it very quickly among the grass and branches when you take a break for lunch or rest. Such a saw will be a great helper in your garden, camping, or travel. It will cope with a tree on the road and help to quickly prepare firewood for the fire. Having bought an additional blade for dry wood – get a chic kit for any situation.

How does it apply this to bushcraft and survival? ⛺️

Saws and sawing play an important role in bushcraft and survival due to the versatility that they provide.

  • 🧩 Saws can be used for tasks such as building shelters, splitting firewood, creating kindling, harvesting food, carving tools and weapons, etc. Having a durable saw is essential for any survival situation since it will allow you to easily create utility structures with less effort than if you only had your hands.
  • 🧩 In wilderness areas, there are often trees with trunks too thick to be cut down by a knife alone. A good saw can help you clear paths, build shelters, construct campfires, and perform many other tasks that require the cutting of wood.
  • 🧩 Sawing is also useful for helping to create traps or even small furniture pieces like chairs or benches.

How do care for saws?

🟧 Proper care and maintenance of saws are essential to ensure their longevity and optimal performance. Here are some important tips on how to care for saws:

  • ⚙️ Cleaning: After each use, remove any debris, sawdust, or residue from the saw blade and handle. Use a soft brush or cloth to clean the blade and handle thoroughly.
  • ⚙️ Lubrication: Apply a thin coat of lubricant or oil to the blade and moving parts of the saw to prevent rust and corrosion. This is particularly important for hand saws with folding mechanisms or adjustable parts.
  • ⚙️ Rust Prevention: Keep saws in a dry environment to prevent moisture buildup and rust formation.
  • ⚙️ Blade Sharpening: Over time, saw blades can become dull and less effective. Sharpen the blade regularly to maintain its cutting performance. You can use a saw file or a sharpening tool designed specifically for saw blades. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or seek professional guidance if you are unsure about the sharpening process.
  • ⚙️ Handle Care: Check the condition of the handle regularly. If the handle becomes loose or damaged, repair or replaces it to maintain a secure and comfortable grip.
How to store saws safely?

✅ Proper storage of saws is crucial not only for their longevity but also for safety reasons. Here are some important guidelines:

  • ✔️ Ensure dry conditions: Store saws in a dry environment to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to rust and corrosion. Moisture can also damage the handle material over time. Consider using a dehumidifier or silica gel packs in the storage area to maintain dry conditions.
  • ✔️ Organize and separate: Keep saws organized and separate from other tools to prevent damage. Use dedicated storage racks, toolboxes, or wall-mounted hangers to provide a designated space for each saw. This helps to avoid unnecessary contact or potential blade damage.
  • ✔️ Store upright or horizontally: Depending on the type of saw, choose an appropriate storage position. For hand saws or smaller saws, storing them upright in a rack or hanging them on a wall-mounted hook is generally ideal. For larger saws, such as circular saws or table saws, horizontal storage on a stable surface is recommended.
  • ✔️ Keep out of reach: Store saws in a location where they are out of reach of children or unauthorized individuals. This helps to prevent accidents and ensures that only trained and responsible individuals have access to the tools.
How do you use a saw effectively?

😉 Using a saw effectively requires proper technique, attention to safety, and an understanding of the characteristics of the specific saw you are using. Here are some important tips:

  • ➡️ Select the right saw: Choose a saw that is appropriate for the material you are cutting and the type of cut you need to make. Different saws are designed for specific purposes, such as crosscutting, rip cuts, or fine woodworking. Ensure that the teeth per inch (TPI) of the saw blade are suitable for the material you are cutting.
  • ➡️ Safety first: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety goggles or glasses, gloves, and ear protection when necessary.
  • ➡️ Grip and posture: Hold the saw with a firm but comfortable grip. Position your body in a stable and balanced stance. For hand saws, use a three-point grip with your thumb resting against the side of the handle for better control. Maintain a relaxed posture and avoid excessive tension in your arms and shoulders.
What are saws made of?

🛠️ Saws are made of various materials, depending on the type and purpose of the saw. Some common materials used in the construction:

📌 Blade Material: The blade of a saw is typically made of different types of steel, which are chosen based on their hardness, durability, and resistance to wear.

  • 💠 High-carbon steel is commonly used for general-purpose hand saws, as it is strong and holds a sharp edge.
  • 💠 For more specialized applications, saw blades can be made from alloys or tool steels that offer specific properties, such as increased toughness or heat resistance.

📌 Teeth Material: The teeth of a saw are usually made of a harder material than the blade to provide effective cutting edges.

  • 💠 For most hand saws, the teeth are made of hardened steel or a combination of high-carbon steel with carbide or diamond particles for added hardness and longevity.
  • 💠 Some saws, like those used for cutting metals or abrasive materials, may feature teeth made of tungsten carbide or other specialized alloys.

📌 Handle Material: The handle, or grip, of a saw, can be made from various materials, depending on factors such as comfort, durability, and ergonomics.

  • 💠 Wood handles, such as those made from beech or ash, are popular for their aesthetic appeal and comfortable feel.
  • 💠 Plastic and rubber handle offer durability, enhanced grip, and resistance to moisture and chemicals.

📌 Additional Components: In addition to the main materials mentioned above, saws may incorporate other components like screws, nuts, bolts, and fasteners.

  • 💠 These are typically made from materials such as stainless steel, brass, or other alloys chosen for their strength, corrosion resistance, and ease of use.
How to protect a saw blade?

🔍 Protecting a saw blade is essential to maintain its sharpness, prevent damage, and ensure safe handling. Effective ways to protect it:

  • ☑️ Use blade covers or sheaths: When the saw is not in use, store the blade in a blade cover or sheath specifically designed for that purpose.
  • ☑️ Store the saw properly: When storing the saw, ensure that the blade is protected from exposure to moisture, dust, and other potential contaminants.
  • ☑️ Keep the blade clean: After each use, clean the saw blade thoroughly to remove any debris, sap, or residue that may have accumulated during cutting.
  • ☑️ Avoid cutting inappropriate materials: Use the saw blade only for its intended purpose and avoid cutting materials that may damage or dull the blade.
  • ☑️ Sharpen and maintain the blade regularly: Keep the saw blade sharp by sharpening it regularly or as needed.

Conclusion 😊

Choosing the right survival saw for your needs can be a daunting task. With this buyer’s guide, you now have all of the information and tips needed to make an informed decision. Make sure you read through each product review carefully so you get exactly what it is that you want from your purchase. Keep in mind safety precautions when using any type of power tool as well! 😉👍

I have never been particularly fond of using saws. I have always believed that all tasks could be accomplished with just a knife or a hatchet. However, after watching several videos where saws were employed to achieve more precise wood processing, I started questioning my stance. Now, I’m curious to hear your opinion on whether saws truly justify their weight in terms of usefulness. If they do, I would appreciate any recommendations you might have for a high-quality folding saw.

In my personal experience, I find that carrying a Corona RS 7245 Razor Tooth Folding Saw is more essential to me than a hatchet. It’s lighter, more efficient in terms of energy expenditure, and I believe it offers greater overall usefulness. I mainly rely on the saw for various tasks, reserving the hatchet solely for splitting logs that are too large to baton with my sheath knife.

I’m currently searching for a folding saw or sliding saw that can effectively handle medium-sized pieces of wood, with a maximum diameter of around 7 inches. My budget for this tool is up to $50.

I’m currently in the market for a saw, and I thought it would be helpful to gather insights from those with more field experience. I’m interested to know what type of saw you use and why you find it beneficial.

In my experience, I have found the Bahco 396-LAP Laplander Folding Saw to be excellent. It offers reliable performance and versatility. Another saw that I have had positive experiences with is the Fiskars Folding Saw.

I might have a different preference compared to others, but I’ve been using the Corona RS 7245 Razor Tooth Folding Saw and it has exceeded my expectations. It offers a cutting performance but at a more affordable price point. I find it to be a reliable and efficient tool that meets my needs perfectly.
