How To Open and Close? 🔪

Operating Kershaw Knives entails a simple yet secure process, thanks to their SpeedSafe-assisted opening mechanism.

🔷 To open this knife, start by locating the flipper or thumb stud on the knife. ➡️ Apply gentle pressure to this lever. ➡️ The SpeedSafe mechanism will engage, causing the blade to swiftly and safely swing out and lock into position. This provides the user with immediate readiness to perform the task at hand.

🔷 When it comes to closing the knife, it requires minor effort but needs to be done cautiously. First, you need to unlock the blade. ➡️ This is typically done by pushing on the liner lock or frame lock, depending on the design of the particular knife model.➡️  This action disengages the lock and allows for the blade to be folded back into the handle. It is crucial that this process is executed with care, ensuring that fingers are clear of the blade’s path while closing, to prevent any potential injuries.

Remember, like any tool, these items should be handled with respect for their sharpness and function. These straightforward steps to opening and closing the knife ensure the user can effectively and safely utilize their Knife, no matter the task.

What are the Lock Types of Kershaw Knife?

⚪ First and foremost, the Frame Lock, also known as the Integral Lock, is a commonly utilized locking mechanism by Kershaw. In this design, a portion of the knife’s handle frame functions as the locking mechanism, engaging the blade tang when it’s in the open position. Frame locks are favoured for their strength, minimalistic aesthetics, and reliability.

⚪ Moreover, the Liner Lock is another prevalent locking mechanism in Kershaw knives. Liner locks incorporate a thin metal liner within one of the handle scales, which is moved aside to release the blade. This design offers a sturdy lockup and ease of use, making it suitable for both right and left-handed individuals. Liner locks are also known for their ambidextrous nature, enhancing the overall user experience.

⚪ Additionally, the Frame Lock with a Flipper is a variation of the frame lock mechanism that incorporates a flipper tab on the blade. This tab serves a dual purpose as both an opening mechanism and a finger guard when the knife is in use. It provides a smooth one-handed deployment.

⚪ In contrast to the aforementioned locks, the Button Lock stands out as an alternative locking mechanism. Kershaw employs button locks in select models, where a spring-loaded button on the handle is engaged to release the blade. This locking system provides an intuitive and quick release of the blade while maintaining a secure lockup during use.

⚪ Furthermore, Kershaw has also introduced the Sub-Frame Lock in some of their knife designs. This innovative locking mechanism combines the strengths of a frame lock with the lightweight properties of a handle scale constructed from a different material. The result is a robust and secure lockup without adding excessive weight to the knife. This design caters to those seeking a balance between strength and weight in their EDC (Everyday Carry) knives.

⚪ Lastly, Kershaw has embraced the SpeedSafe Assisted Opening mechanism, which, while not a traditional lock type, plays a pivotal role in their folding knife designs. SpeedSafe is a patented torsion bar system that aids in the smooth, one-handed, and safe opening of the knife. This mechanism ensures that the blade is readily accessible while simultaneously mitigating the risk of accidental deployment.

What Kershaw Knife is Better - SpeedSafe vs. Automatic?

The choice between SpeedSafe and automatic knives ultimately depends on personal preference and legal considerations in your area.

SpeedSafe (Assisted Opening) : Automatic (Spring-Assisted):
SpeedSafe is a popular feature in Kershaw knives, providing an assisted opening mechanism. Automatic knives, also known as switchblades, feature a spring-loaded mechanism that opens the blade with the press of a button or lever.
With SpeedSafe, the knife blade is partially opened manually, and then a spring takes over, swiftly deploying the blade into the fully open position. Automatic knives provide rapid blade deployment, which can be advantageous in certain situations that require immediate action.
It allows for quick and effortless one-handed opening, making it convenient for everyday tasks. However, it’s important to note that the possession and use of automatic knives may be restricted or prohibited by law in many jurisdictions.

We can assure you that this video will certainly clarify the difference 📺

What are Kershaw Blade Coatings and Finishes?

🟡 To start with, Black Oxide is a commonly utilized blade coating by Kershaw. This coating is applied to the blade’s surface through a chemical process that creates a layer of black iron oxide. Black oxide provides several advantages, such as increased corrosion resistance, reduced glare, and a sleek, non-reflective appearance.

🟡 Besides, Kershaw utilizes the DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating on some of their knife blades. DLC is a hard and wear-resistant coating that offers exceptional durability. It is formed by depositing a layer of carbon-based material, similar in structure to diamond, onto the blade’s surface. DLC coatings not only enhance blade longevity but also provide a sleek, low-friction finish.

🟡 In addition to these coatings, it employs Stonewash Finishes on many of its blades. Stonewashing is a mechanical finishing process where the blade is tumbled with abrasive materials, such as stones or ceramic beads. This process results in a rugged, textured appearance with a distressed look.

🟡 Moreover, they offer knives with Satin Finishes, which are characterized by a smooth, reflective surface achieved through abrasive polishing. Satin finishes are not only visually appealing but also contribute to improved corrosion resistance by sealing the blade’s surface. This finish is often chosen for its clean and elegant appearance, making it suitable for both everyday carry and collector’s knives.

🟡 For enhanced corrosion resistance and a distinctive appearance, Kershaw also utilizes Titanium Nitride (TiNi) coatings on some blades. Titanium nitride is a ceramic material applied to the blade’s surface using a physical vapour deposition (PVD) process. TiNi coatings offer excellent resistance to wear and corrosion, while the gold or bronze colour variations add a touch of luxury to the knife’s design.

What is Kershaw Handle Materials?

🔰 One of the most prevalent handle materials employed by Kershaw is G-10, a high-pressure fibreglass laminate. G-10 is valued for its exceptional durability, resistance to moisture and chemicals, and its ability to maintain a secure grip even in wet conditions. Additionally, G-10 handles are lightweight and can be textured or contoured to provide a comfortable and secure grip.

🔰 Stainless Steel is another frequently used handle material. Stainless steel handles offer durability and resistance to corrosion, which is particularly advantageous for outdoor and marine applications. These handles can be further enhanced with texturing or machining to improve grip.

🔰 Furthermore, Kershaw utilizes Aluminum as a handle material in several of their knife models. Aluminium handles are lauded for their lightweight nature, corrosion resistance, and inherent strength. They are often anodized for added durability and to introduce a variety of colour options. Aluminium handles can be ergonomically shaped and textured to ensure a comfortable and secure grip.

🔰 In addition to these materials, Kershaw incorporates Carbon Fiber into some of their knife handles. Carbon fibre is renowned for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and luxurious appearance. Carbon fibre handles are lightweight and durable, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, including high-end collector’s knives.

🔰 Lastly, Wood handles are another handle material choice. Wooden handles offer a classic and timeless aesthetic appeal. While they may require more maintenance to preserve their appearance and integrity, wooden handles provide a warm and natural feel, making them popular for traditional and collector’s knives.

I really enjoy using my Launch 8 knife because it has a quick deployment and a modern design that is a great update to classic stiletto knives. The carbon fiber on the knife also adds a nice touch. However, my favorite Kershaw knife is the Blur and it would be great if they started making it in carbon fiber again.
