Best Emergency Candles - Editor's Choice

What are emergency candles? 🤔

They are designed to provide lighting in the absence of electricity during an emergency. These candles provide a safe and reliable way to light up your home or workplace when power outages occur, making them essential in disaster preparedness kits.

Emergency candles

Features ✒️

Emergency candles are an essential tool for any home emergency kit and can provide much-needed comfort and light during power outages. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles to meet different needs.

  • ☑️ One of the most important features is burn time. Look for candles that offer an extended burn time of up to 12 hours. Longer burning candles will provide more than enough light throughout a power outage.
  • ☑️ It’s also important to look for candles that are made with high-quality ingredients such as beeswax, soy wax, or paraffin wax. These materials are safe and non-toxic and offer a longer burn time than traditional paraffin candles. Additionally, look for candles that come with wicks already attached for easy lighting in case of an emergency.
  • ☑️ Another feature is wind resistance. Wind can quickly blow out small candles, so it’s best to choose ones that have been designed to resist windy conditions or come with a protective cover. This will ensure that the candle stays lit and produces enough light throughout an emergency.
  • ☑️ Finally, look for candles that come in a variety of sizes. Having multiple candles on hand can be useful if you’re trying to light multiple rooms or areas at once.

Benefits of emergency candles

Which candle is the best for an emergency kit? 🔍

When it comes to assembling an emergency kit, including the right type of candle is essential. Whether you are stocking up for a storm, hurricane, or other natural disaster, a quality emergency candle can provide light and heat in an otherwise dark and cold situation.

  • ✨ For starters, beeswax candles are a great choice since they burn at a higher temperature than paraffin-based candles. Beeswax candles also produce cleaner burning with no soot compared to other waxes like soy or paraffin. They will also last longer than any other type of candle, making them ideal for emergencies where you may need light for extended periods.
  • ✨ In addition to beeswax, you may want to consider purchasing an LED flameless candle. These are battery-powered candles that produce bright light without generating heat or the potential risk of fire associated with traditional wick-based candles. They typically come in various sizes and colors, allowing for versatility depending on your needs.

🔍 When selecting which type of candle is best suited for your needs, make sure to consider your unique conditions and environment.

  • ✔️ For example, if you live in a damp area or may need to leave your home due to flooding during an event such as a hurricane then waterproof options may be best suited for you.
  • ✔️ Other factors such as wind protection should be taken into account when selecting an appropriate type of candle too; large flame candles with enclosed glass jars can help reduce the effects of wind on your flame while providing more light output than those without containers.

Tea lights for emergency 🕯️

Emergency candles, such as tea lights, can be used for a variety of purposes in an emergency. They can provide a form of heating, cooking, and lighting when electricity is out or other sources of energy are unavailable.

  • 💥 Heating: It can provide a source of heat to warm up a room, by placing several around the room with the flame facing away from furniture and curtains. The heat from the tea light candles will warm up the air and help to make a room comfortable in cold conditions. They are also great for quickly warming up blankets or clothing before using them.
  • 💥 Cooking: Such lights can also be used as an emergency stovetop for quick cooking solutions if electricity is not available. Put several tea light candles together in a metallic tray over which you can place a pan to boil water or cook food. This provides an easy solution when there is no gas or electric power available.
  • 💥 Lightning: Lastly, they can be used as emergency lighting for dark rooms and hallways when electricity is out. Place multiple tea light candles at various locations throughout your home, just like you would do with nightlights during normal times. This will provide enough subtle illumination to move around safely without tripping over any items on the floor.

FAQ 🧐

Why are candles important in an emergency?

💡 Candles serve as important tools during emergencies for several reasons:

  • Lighting: In situations where there is a power outage or failure, candles provide a reliable source of light. They can illuminate a room, allowing you to navigate safely and perform essential tasks.
  • Emergency Signaling: Candles can be used as a form of signaling for help during emergencies. Placing lit candles in windows or other visible locations can attract attention from rescuers or passersby.
  • Heat Source: Candles produce heat, which can be valuable during cold weather or situations where heating systems are unavailable. They can provide a small amount of warmth in a confined space, helping to keep you comfortable.
  • Extended Use: Some candles, especially larger pillar candles, have longer burn times, such as the 35-hour candles mentioned earlier. This extended burn time can be particularly useful during prolonged power outages or situations where access to electricity is limited.
  • Alternative Light Source: Candles can serve as a backup when other lighting sources, such as flashlights or batteries, are not available or have run out. They offer a simple and easily accessible option for providing illumination.
What are emergency candles made from?

🟦 Emergency candles are typically made from a variety of materials, each with its advantages and characteristics. The most common types of materials include:

  • ⌛️ Paraffin Wax: It is a petroleum-based wax that is commonly used in candle making. It is known for its affordability, availability, and ability to produce a steady and reliable flame. Paraffin wax candles often have a long burn time and are widely used as emergency candles.
  • ⌛️ Beeswax: It is a natural wax produced by honeybees. It is known for its clean-burning properties, as it does not produce as much soot or smoke as other types of wax. Beeswax candles also have a pleasant, subtle scent. However, they tend to be more expensive than candles made from other materials.
  • ⌛️ Soy Wax: It is derived from soybean oil and is considered a renewable and eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based waxes. It burns cleanly and slowly, providing a long-lasting flame. Soy wax candles are often preferred by those looking for a more sustainable option.
  • ⌛️ Vegetable Wax Blends: Some emergency candles are made from a blend of different vegetable waxes, such as soy wax, palm wax, or coconut wax. These blends aim to combine the desirable qualities of different waxes to create a balanced and efficient candle.
Are candles good for energy?

📢 Candles themselves do not generate energy as they require an external ignition source, such as a match or lighter, to produce a flame. However, they can serve as a useful alternative source of light and heat during power outages or situations where access to electricity is limited. In that sense, they can be considered as a form of energy backup.

🟣 While candles can help provide temporary lighting and heat during emergencies, they are not a sustainable or long-term solution for meeting energy needs. Their energy output is limited, and they eventually burn out once the wax is consumed.

❗ It’s important to remember that when using candles for emergency purposes, safety precautions should be followed, and they should never be left unattended.

Which candles are safe?

❇️ When used properly and under the right conditions, candles can be safe. However, it’s essential to follow some guidelines to ensure their safe use:

  • 🚩 Never leave a burning candle unattended: Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep. Unattended candles can pose a fire risk.
  • 🚩 Keep candles away from flammable materials: Ensure that candles are placed on a stable and heat-resistant surface away from combustible objects such as curtains, furniture, paper, or bedding.
  • 🚩 Use appropriate candle holders: Place candles in sturdy candle holders that can catch any dripping wax and provide stability. Avoid using flimsy or unstable holders that may topple over.
  • 🚩 Trim the wick: Keep the wick trimmed to about ¼ inch before lighting the candle. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping, or flickering flames.
  • 🚩 Burn candles in a well-ventilated area: Ensure that there is sufficient airflow around the candle to prevent the accumulation of smoke or soot. Avoid burning candles in tight or enclosed spaces.
  • 🚩 Keep candles out of reach of children and pets: Place candles in areas where they cannot be easily accessed by curious children or pets to prevent accidental burns or fire hazards.
  • 🚩 Do not touch or move a lit candle: Allow the candle to cool completely before touching or moving it. Hot wax or a burning flame can cause burns or spills if mishandled.
  • 🚩 Extinguish candles properly: Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame to extinguish the candle. Avoid blowing or snuffing out the candle forcefully, as it may cause the hot wax to splatter.
  • 🚩 Consider flameless alternatives: If safety is a primary concern, consider using flameless LED candles or other battery-operated alternatives that mimic the appearance of real candles without the fire risk.
Do candles need ventilation?

😉 Yes, candles generally benefit from proper ventilation.

  • 🕯 While candles do not produce harmful gases in significant quantities, they do produce small amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor when they burn. In well-ventilated areas, these byproducts can dissipate and disperse without causing any issues.
  • 🕯 However, in poorly ventilated or confined spaces, the accumulation of these byproducts can lead to a decrease in air quality. The increased levels of CO2 and moisture can contribute to a stuffy or humid environment. It is especially important to ensure adequate ventilation when burning multiple candles or in spaces with limited airflow.

👍 Good ventilation helps maintain fresh air circulation, prevents the build-up of smoke or soot, and reduces the risk of respiratory discomfort. Opening windows or using fans can help improve air circulation when burning candles indoors. Additionally, using candles in well-ventilated areas reduces the likelihood of triggering smoke detectors.

Conclusion 🙂

The best emergency candles can provide a reliable source of light and heat in an unexpected power outage. With the right features, these candles are also safe to use indoors or outdoors. Before you buy any candle for emergencies, consider its scent, burn time, size, type of wick used, and other special features that might make it even more useful during a crisis. We hope this buyer’s guide has helped you find the perfect candle to suit your needs! 🤩❤️‍🔥

As I was discussing emergency preparedness with my 3-year-old son, who is now eager to be ready for any emergency, he reminded me that we need more candles. He mentioned candles for cakes, but I also emphasized their importance for providing light in case our flashlights fail, especially in the event of an EMP. I’m curious to hear from others about their go-to size and quantity of candles they have in their emergency stash. Any tips or comments would be greatly appreciated!

I prefer Stonebriar 6-7 Hour Long Burning Unscented Tea Light Candles because they offer versatility in emergencies. I find them convenient to carry in my Bug Out Bag (BOB) as part of my fire kit. Additionally, tea lights work exceptionally well for creating terra cotta heaters using inexpensive pots. While other candles may suffice, I’ve found that tea lights are particularly effective for this purpose.

It’s important to note that not all candles are created equal when it comes to the amount of light they produce. On the other hand, Hyoola 9-Day White Prayer Candles provide a nice, bright flame by candle standards. I’ve discovered that they are a great option for emergency lighting.

In my experience, there is a common misconception that soybean wax candles burn significantly longer (100-300 hours) compared to regular candles made from paraffin wax found in grocery stores. However, based on my testing during a power outage one night, I found that this claim is not accurate. Soybean wax candles did not burn any longer than regular paraffin candles. The burn times were essentially the same for both types. It’s important to be aware of such misconceptions and not solely rely on claims of extended burn times when choosing candles.

I also thinks that Bolsius Straight Unscented Ivory Candles are a fantastic option to consider. I recommend buying a case of these candles and keeping them on hand for future use. They are a valuable resource to have for any unexpected moments or emergencies. When compared to tea candles, which may not provide the same longevity or impact, these candles offer a more substantial and meaningful experience.
