What is a survival hiking stick? 🧐

It is an essential item when venturing outdoors. It provides stability on uneven terrain, assistance in rough terrain, and balance while walking on inclines. Additionally, the stick can be used as a makeshift weapon to ward off potential predators or as a support for crossing rivers and streams.

Survival Hiking Stick

Features ⌛️

A survival hiking stick is an essential tool for any outdoor enthusiast. It provides stability and can be used as a makeshift weapon in case of an emergency. Here are some features:

✅ Durability: A quality survival stick should be made from sturdy materials such as aluminum or stainless steel. It should also have a protective coating to help it withstand the elements.
Weight: A heavier stick can provide more stability, but it also adds extra weight to your pack and may not be ideal for longer hikes. Look for lightweight options that are still durable enough to offer support on uneven terrain.
Length: Choosing the right length is important for comfort and safety. Shorter sticks provide better balance but may not reach areas that require extra stability, like deep holes or slippery slopes. Longer sticks offer more support but can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces.
Comfort Grip: The handle of the hiking stick should be comfortable to hold and should offer a secure grip. Look for one that has a rubberized or foam grip, as this will help absorb some of the shocks when you are traversing rough terrain.
Accessories: Some sticks come with additional features such as compasses, whistles, and compartments for storing small items like snacks or maps. If you plan on doing long hikes, it can be helpful to have these extra features available.

Benefits of survival hiking stick

How to properly size it? 📝

When selecting a survival hiking stick, it is important to pay attention to size.

  • 🔷 As a general rule, the ideal length of a stick for an average-height adult is around 54 inches (137.2 cm).
  • 🔷 To find the perfect fit, hold the stick in front of you with both hands at shoulder width, and if it reaches just past your chin then it is likely the right size for you. Shorter sticks are more suitable for steep trails or difficult terrain while longer ones can provide better balance on flat surfaces.
  • 🔷 It is also important to consider whether any additional accessories are needed when sizing up your stick. If you are considering these options, be sure that the stick is long enough to accommodate them without compromising its balance and stability when in use.

FAQ ❓

Why do hikers use two sticks?

✍️ Hikers often use two sticks, known as trekking poles or hiking poles, for a variety of reasons. Here are some key benefits:

  • ✔️ Stability and Balance: They provide extra points of contact with the ground, offering increased stability and balance. They help distribute your weight more evenly, especially on uneven or challenging terrains such as steep ascents or descents, rocky surfaces, or slippery trails. This can reduce the risk of falls and provide greater confidence while hiking.
  • ✔️ Reduce Strain on Joints: Sticks help absorb some of the impact and shock that would otherwise be absorbed by your knees and leg joints. By transferring some of the load to your arms and upper body, they can alleviate strain on your joints, particularly during long hikes or when carrying heavy backpacks.
  • ✔️ Downhill Control: On downhill sections, hiking poles act as reliable anchors, providing stability and control. They can help prevent slips and slides by providing support and additional points of contact with the ground. By relieving some of the strain on your legs, they can also reduce muscle fatigue during steep descents.
What is the best material for hiking sticks?

🧩 When it comes to choosing the best material for hiking poles, several options are available, each with its strengths and considerations. The most common materials used:

  • 🛠️ Aluminum: Aluminum sticks are widely popular due to their durability, affordability, and versatility. They offer excellent strength-to-weight ratios, making them suitable for various hiking conditions. Aluminum poles are sturdy and can withstand rough terrains and heavy use. They are also less prone to breaking or shattering upon impact. Additionally, these sticks tend to be more budget-friendly compared to other materials.
  • 🛠️ Carbon Fiber: Carbon fiber hiking sticks are known for their lightweight construction, making them a preferred choice for hikers seeking maximum weight reduction. Such sticks offer excellent vibration-dampening properties, which can help reduce fatigue during long hikes. They are also highly resistant to corrosion. However, carbon fiber sticks can be more expensive than aluminum options, and they may be more susceptible to breaking or fracturing under extreme stress or impact.
  • 🛠️ Composite Materials: Some sticks are made from composite materials, which are a combination of different materials such as carbon fiber and fiberglass. They aim to strike a balance between weight, durability, and cost. Composite poles can offer a good compromise between the lightweight nature of carbon fiber and the affordability of aluminum. They provide decent strength and performance while being more budget-friendly than pure carbon fiber poles.
How important are survival sticks?

➡️ Hiking sticks, also known as trekking poles, can be highly beneficial for hikers and are considered an important piece of equipment by many outdoor enthusiasts. Here are some reasons why hiking sticks are important:

  • 🟣 Stability and Balance: Hiking sticks provide additional points of contact with the ground, enhancing stability and balance while hiking. They help distribute your weight more evenly, especially on uneven or challenging terrains, reducing the risk of slips, trips, and falls.
  • 🟣 Joint Protection: They help reduce the impact and strain on your joints, especially the knees and ankles. By transferring some of the load to your arms and upper body, they can alleviate stress on your lower body joints, making them beneficial for hikers with pre-existing joint issues or those carrying heavy backpacks.
  • 🟣 Endurance and Energy Conservation: Using hiking sticks can help conserve your energy and improve endurance. Engaging your upper body muscles, they contribute to a more balanced workload, reducing the strain on your legs. This can result in less fatigue, allowing you to hike longer distances with greater comfort and efficiency.
  • 🟣 Multi-purpose Use: Hiking sticks can serve multiple purposes beyond providing support and stability. They can be used to probe uncertain terrain, test water depth, clear spider webs, or even serve as makeshift tent poles in certain situations. They offer versatility and can prove invaluable in various outdoor scenarios.
What is the best way to use such sticks?

💡 To make the most of your hiking sticks or trekking poles, it’s important to use them correctly. Here are some tips on how to use it effectively:

  • Adjust the Length: Start by adjusting the length of your hiking sticks to suit your height and the terrain you’ll be hiking on. Most hiking sticks have adjustable sections that allow you to customize the length.
  • Grip Properly: Hold the handle of each hiking stick with a relaxed grip. Most hiking sticks have ergonomic handles designed for comfort.
  • Start with a Rhythm: Begin walking with a natural rhythm and incorporate the use of your hiking sticks into your stride. As you step forward with your left foot, plant the right hiking stick (and vice versa) slightly ahead and to the side of your body. This helps maintain balance and stability.
  • Maintain a Natural Arm Swing: Allow your arms to swing naturally as you walk, and let the hiking sticks move with your arm motion. Avoid gripping the handles too tightly or using excessive force, as this can lead to muscle fatigue and discomfort.
How does the walking stick stay safe?

💥 To ensure the safety of a walking stick while hiking, consider the following tips:

  • 💠 Proper Storage: When not in use, store the stick in a safe and secure location. This could be in a designated rack or holder specifically designed for walking sticks, or in a protective case or bag to prevent damage.
  • 💠 Avoid Excessive Force: While walking or using the walking stick for support, avoid applying excessive force or putting too much weight on it.
  • 💠 Check for Wear and Tear: Regularly inspect the walking stick for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, splinters, or loose parts. If you notice any damage, it’s important to address it promptly.
  • 💠 Secure Attachments: If your walking stick has attachments or accessories such as wrist straps, ensure they are securely fastened and properly adjusted. This will prevent accidental slippage or detachment during use.
How do you lock hiking sticks?

💣 Hiking sticks or trekking poles typically do not have locking mechanisms like traditional locks. Instead, they usually have adjustable sections that can be extended or retracted to customize the length of the pole. The adjustment mechanisms vary depending on the type and brand of hiking sticks. The most common types of locking mechanisms are:

  • 🔰 Twist Lock: This type of locking mechanism involves twisting the sections of the pole in opposite directions to lock or unlock them. To adjust the length, you twist the sections to loosen them, adjust them to the desired length, and then twist again to secure them in place.
  • 🔰 Lever Lock: Lever locks have a lever or clamp mechanism that can be opened or closed to secure the sections of the pole. To adjust the length, you open the lever, slide the sections to the desired length, and then close the lever to lock them in place.
  • 🔰 Flip Lock: Flip locks have a lever or latch that you can flip open or close to lock or release the sections of the pole. To adjust the length, you flip open the latch, adjust the sections, and then flip the latch closed to secure them.

Conclusion 😉

Choosing the right survival hiking stick is an important decision. With so many options available on the market, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by all of your choices. Whether you’re searching for something lightweight and compact or built with extra strength in mind, we hope this article has helped guide you toward making an informed purchase that will last well into your future outdoor adventures! 🥰❤️‍🔥

Can you help me please with deciding between walking staff and trekking poles?

I must say, trekking poles are fantastic. FitTrek Trekking Poles have been a game-changer for me, reducing the strain on my lower body and transforming my walks into a comprehensive full-body workout. Particularly when faced with challenging elevation changes, these poles act as reliable handrails, providing constant support and assistance during ascents and descents. However, it’s crucial to learn the proper technique for using them. Setting up the straps correctly is key because without doing so, you’ll find yourself unnecessarily exerting your grip and setting yourself up for potential difficulties.

Speaking from years of experience using both walking staff and trekking poles, I must admit that there is a noticeable difference in quality. When it comes to choosing between a cheap walking staff and cheap trekking poles, I would opt for the walking staff. However, if given the option of high-quality trekking poles, they would be my top choice without a doubt. The benefits and versatility they offer during hikes and treks are unmatched. Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles provide stability, and support, and help alleviate strain on the body, making them an essential piece of gear for any outdoor enthusiast.

I’m currently in the process of crafting my hiking staff and I’ve been contemplating the various practical elements I can incorporate into it. I’ve come across several intriguing ideas, such as burning unique designs onto the staff, showcasing different animal tracks as samples, and even incorporating cord wraps. I also want to add a magnet to my stick. Is it will be a good idea?

Based on my experience in walking and crafting staffs, I’ve adopted a particular philosophy: “Let the tool fulfill its purpose” and “a tool that tries to do too many ends up doing none of it well.” This means that when it comes to adding attachments or widgets to a hiking staff, I prefer to keep it modest. Aside from a simple cord wrap to secure cordage, I avoid attaching too many additional gadgets. This approach ensures that the staff maintains its optimal weight, balance, and functionality, without becoming cluttered or cumbersome. It’s important to appreciate the inherent qualities of good stuff and not overcomplicate it with excessive embellishments.

After an unfortunate incident of losing a stick while crossing a river, I modified my current hiking staff. I decided to attach a wrist loop made of paracord firmly to the staff by drilling a hole about 12 inches from the top. It has proven to be quite practical and provides added security. While I find the idea of incorporating a magnet into the staff intriguing, I do have some reservations. Using a magnet near a compass, which is essential for navigation, could potentially interfere with its accuracy. However, I believe a magnet placed at the bottom of the staff could be a viable option. It could serve as a useful tool for picking up small metallic objects along the way, adding an element of curiosity to my hikes.
