Features 🧐

❇️ One of the key features is its robust construction. Made from high-quality, durable materials, it’s designed to withstand harsh conditions and heavy usage, ensuring long-term reliability.

❇️ The design is another standout feature. It offers a streamlined fit that doesn’t interfere with the overall handling of the shotgun. It is equipped with shell holders that keep the ammunition secure even in fast-paced or turbulent situations, reducing the risk of accidental shell drop.

❇️ The ease of installation is another notable feature. It attaches swiftly and securely to the side of the shotgun, requiring minimal tools and expertise. This user-friendly design makes it a popular choice among shotgun owners.

❇️ Lastly, the Side Saddle enhances the functional efficiency of the shotgun. Positioning additional ammo within easy reach allows for quick and seamless reloading, which can be particularly beneficial in high-pressure situations where every second counts.

Benefits 😏

💢 The core benefit of a side saddle is the ability to keep extra rounds instantly accessible without needing to dig through pockets or gear. Shotguns typically only hold between 4-8 shells total in the under-barrel magazine tube. A side saddle adds an additional 6-8 rounds mounted right on the receiver, well within the shooter’s reach. ➡️ This means more ammunition can be accessed quickly without taking the firearm out of the shoulder firing position.

💢 By having those extra shells right on the gun itself, reloading the shotgun is vastly sped up. Shotshells can be accessed and loaded singlehandedly in seconds. ➡️ This is critically important in high-volume shooting sports like 3 gun competitions. Police and defence users also benefit from accelerated reloads in tense situations.

💢 Quality items securely retain shells in machined or moulded slots until needed. This protects ammunition from falling out or getting bumped around during routine handling. The solid construction also shields shotshell primers from exposure that could lead to misfires. ➡️ Reliable retention and protection enable the side saddle to serve as on-gun auxiliary storage.

💢 They allow hunters, competition shooters and law enforcement to segregate speciality rounds from standard loads. Different types of slugs or less-than-lethal rounds can be stored separately for selective access. Colour coding slots help identify ammunition at a glance. ➡️ This modular flexibility helps the shooter match ammo to specific situations.

Maintenance 🤠

✅ Firstly, it’s important to gently remove the side saddle from the shotgun. You should remember to keep all the screws and bolts safe as losing these small parts can pose a challenge when reassembling.

✅ Secondly, wipe off any visible dirt or grime from the saddle using a soft cloth. You may opt to use a cleaning solution specifically designed for gun parts. When using such a solution, it’s suggested to apply it to the cloth rather than directly onto the saddle to prevent over-saturation.

✅ Moreover, it’s essential to examine the shell holders carefully. Over time, they may accumulate dust and debris. A soft brush or a can of compressed air can be effective in cleaning these tighter spaces. Remember to clean gently to avoid damaging the holders or displacing them from their designed position.

✅ Finally, once the side saddle is thoroughly cleaned, you should allow it to dry completely before reattaching it to the shotgun. Regular lubrication of the attaching mechanism is also recommended, ensuring smooth attachment and detachment. When reassembling, do it carefully, ensuring that all parts are correctly and securely fitted.

Installation 😬

🛠️ You will need a screwdriver or hex key, depending on the specific design of your side saddle. It’s also advisable to have a small container to hold the screws and bolts during the installation process to prevent misplacement.

🟡 To begin, ensure your shotgun is unloaded and safe to work on. Open the action to verify the chamber and magazine tube are clear of any ammunition. Please remember, that safety is paramount when handling firearms, even during maintenance or modification.

🟡 Next, you’ll want to remove the existing pins from the receiver of your Remington 870 using your screwdriver or hex key. These pins are typically located just above and below the trigger assembly.

🟡 Once the pins are removed, align your side saddle with the holes where the pins were previously located. Once aligned, insert the new, longer pins provided with the side saddle and tighten them securely but do not over-tighten as this could potentially damage the threading or the receiver.

🟡 The installation process is now complete, and it’s time to test the side saddle’s fit and retention. Insert some dummy shells and ensure they are held securely. The shells should be tight enough not to fall out, but loose enough to be removed with a firm pull.

⚠️ Finally, always remember to check the functionality of your shotgun after any modification. Cycle the action several times and dry fire (in a safe direction) to ensure that everything still works correctly.

FAQ ❓

What types of shells will work with a side saddle?

Side saddles for the Remington 870 are designed to accommodate the full range of 12 gauge shotshell sizes and types without issue. The most important factor for compatibility is the length of the shell.

Standard 2-3/4″ shells are ubiquitous and will function reliably in any saddle. The longer 3″ magnum shells will also work in magnum-compatible saddles, as the slightly extended case still locks securely into the machined slots.

Beyond basic length, side saddles are not at all limited or selective when it comes to hull material, payload type, power level, primer style, or brand of shotshells. Plastic and brass hulls both work equally well, as the saddle slots simply retain the shell itself and are not material-specific. Similarly, the payload inside the shell, whether lead shot for hunting, steel shot for waterfowl, buckshot for defence, or slugs for the big game, does not affect fit or functionality.

Standard velocity target loads, high-velocity field loads, and even magnum-powered rounds with higher chamber pressures are all compatible, as the saddle does not regulate or restrict based on a shell’s velocity or power level.

Side saddles also work with any primer type, including a boxer, Berdan, nickel and tin. There are no sensitivity issues or detonation risks with any primer variation.

🟢 When it comes to gauging, 12 gauge is the only size that works with Remington 870 side saddles, as 20 gauge shells are too small and will not lock into the retention slots. For a 20 gauge pump shotgun, dedicated 20 gauge saddles would be needed.

What types of side saddles exist for Remington 870?

There are several types of side saddles available for the Remington 870, each with unique features to suit different preferences and shooting scenarios.

  1. ⚪ Standard Shell Holders: These are the most common type of side saddles. They are typically made from durable, high-strength materials such as polymer or aluminium and are engineered to hold shells securely, yet provide quick and easy access when required.
  2. ⚪ Modular Side Saddle: A relatively new innovation is the modular side saddle. This design allows the user to customize the shell holder configuration to fit their specific needs. The shell holders in these models can be added, removed, or reoriented for optimum user convenience.
  3. ⚪ Side Saddle with Rail: For those who require additional mounting space for accessories such as optics or lights, a side saddle with an integrated rail system provides a practical solution. These types are often seen in tactical or home defence setups.
  4. ⚪ Elastic Loop Side Saddle: For a more lightweight and affordable option, there are side saddles that utilize elastic loops to secure the shells. However, they may not offer the same level of durability or security as their hard-shell counterparts.
  5. ⚪ Quick Detach Side Saddle: These side saddles are designed for shooters who need the ability to rapidly attach and detach the side saddle from their shotgun. They usually feature a quick-release mechanism for ease of use.

Each type of side saddle offers unique advantages, and the choice largely depends on the specific requirements and preferences of the user.

What materials are the best for Remington 870 Side Saddle?
Polymer/Plastic: Polymer items are lightweight, affordable, and resistant to rust and corrosion. They are a popular choice for many shooters due to their durability and cost-effectiveness. Polymer side saddles are also less likely to scratch or damage your shotgun’s receiver. They may not be as aesthetically pleasing as metal options, but they get the job done.
Aluminum: Aluminum saddles are lightweight and durable. They offer a good balance between weight and strength. They are resistant to corrosion and can be anodized for added protection. Aluminium side saddles are often chosen for their sleek appearance and reliability.
Steel: Steel units are extremely durable and can withstand heavy use. They are often preferred by those who want the utmost in ruggedness. However, steel side saddles can be heavier than polymer or aluminium options, which may affect the overall balance of your shotgun.
Nylon Fabric/Shell Carriers: Some side saddles are made from nylon fabric and feature elastic loops or Velcro straps to hold shotgun shells. These are very lightweight and flexible, allowing you to carry a variety of shell sizes. However, they may not be as durable as hard-shell options and may wear out over time.
Hybrid Materials: Some of them combine different materials to achieve a balance between strength, weight, and cost. For example, you might find side saddles with a polymer base and aluminium shell holders for added rigidity and durability.
How do you load and unload the side saddle?

☑️ To load shells, simply press them down into the retention slots on the saddle until they snap securely in place. Each slot will hold one shell firmly until ready for use. Load the saddle by filling slots starting from either the rear or front and working your way across. Leave any unused slots empty.

When loading the gun, the first shell gets fed directly into the magazine tube as normal. After firing, the saddle makes reloads much faster, as you can pull shells directly from the saddle slots to replenish the magazine without fumbling with a pouch or carrier.

To unload shells, press forward and down on the shell base protruding from the saddle slot to overcome the retention mechanism and release the shell. It takes some reasonable pressure to avoid shells popping out prematurely.

Alternatively, slide a shell slightly rearward before pressing down to unlock it. This motion mimics the pump action cycle to smoothly eject the shell.

How many gauge rounds you can carry with the help of Remington 870 side saddles?

These saddles are specifically designed to hold extra 12 gauge shotgun shells. The 12 gauge is the most common and versatile gauge size used in pump action shotguns like the 870.

Most Remington 870 side saddles on the market hold between 4-8 extra rounds of 12 gauge ammunition. Here are some typical carrying capacities:

  • ✔️ 4 round side saddles – These smaller saddles add minimal weight and bulk while still providing a few extra shells. Total capacity is 8-12 rounds.
  • ✔️ 6 round side saddles – The most popular size, adding a fast half-dozen reloads. Total capacity is 10-14 rounds.
  • ✔️ 8 round side saddles – For extended shoots, these saddles maximize onboard ammo. Total capacity is 12-16 rounds.

In addition to the side saddle shells, the Remington 870 itself holds between 4-6 rounds of 12 gauge ammunition in its under-barrel tubular magazine. So in total, with a full 6-round side saddle installed, you are carrying an absolute maximum of 14-16 rounds of 12 gauge shells ready to fire. This is the most any Remington 870 can hold utilizing the side saddle system.

Hey folks, I’ve been having some issues with my Remington 870 side saddle. It seems like the rounds are not feeding smoothly, and I’m getting some jams. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

I had a similar issue a while back. First, check if the rounds are seated properly in the side saddle and not binding. Also, make sure the screws holding the side saddle in place are tightened securely. Loose screws can cause misfeeds.

The same problem with my Remington 870 side saddle. Turned out, it was a spring tension issue. I adjusted the tension slightly, and it solved the feeding problems. Just be careful not to over-tighten the spring; you don’t want to crush your shells.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I’ll give these suggestions a try and see if they solve my feeding problems. It’s frustrating when your shotgun isn’t running smoothly.

I’ve been using the TacStar Side Saddle on my Remington 870 for a while now, and it’s been solid. Easy to install, holds six rounds, and it hasn’t caused any feeding issues. Plus, it’s affordable.

Another thumbs up for the TacStar. I’ve also heard good things about the Mesa Tactical side saddle. Anyone here have experience with that one?

I’ve got the Mesa Tactical side saddle on my Remington 870, and I love it. It’s a bit pricier than the TacStar, but the build quality is excellent. Holds 6 or 8 rounds, depending on the model you choose. Never had a single issue with it.
