Best Rangefinder for Hunting - Editor's Choice

What is a Rangefinder For Hunting? 💡

It is a device used to measure the distance between the hunter and the target. It utilizes advanced technology, such as laser or GPS (Global Positioning System), to accurately determine the distance to an object, typically in yards or meters.

Best Rangefinder for Hunting

How It Works 🔔

The rangefinder uses a light source, typically a laser or a GPS signal, to send out a beam of energy toward the target.➡️  When the beam reaches the target, it bounces back or reflects off the object. ➡️ The sensors detect the returning beam and measure the time it takes for the beam to travel to the target and back. ➡️ Using the time measurement, the internal calculations determine the distance between the hunter and the target.➡️  Finally, it displays the distance on its screen or through the eyepiece, allowing the hunter to see the precise distance to the target.

Types 🔊

Laser Rangefinders

These are the most common types used by hunters. They work by emitting a pulse of laser light and measuring the time it takes for the light to reflect back. This time is then used to calculate the distance to the target.

They are very accurate and can range targets from a few yards to several thousand yards away. They are also relatively fast and easy to use. However, laser items can be affected by weather conditions, such as fog or rain, and they can also be difficult to use in low-light conditions.

GPS Rangefinders

GPS items use satellite signals to calculate the distance to a target. They are not as accurate as laser units, but they are not affected by weather conditions and they can be used in low-light conditions. They can also be used to track the movement of a target.

However, these items can be slower to range targets than laser items, and they can also be less accurate in dense cover.

How To Use 🔐

🔘 First of all, we recommend choosing the right rangefinder for your needs. There are many of them on the market, so it is important to choose one that is right for your needs. Consider the following factors:

  • Range: Make sure to choose one with a range that is sufficient for the distances you will be shooting. For most hunting applications, a rangefinder with a range of 500-800 yards will be sufficient.
  • Accuracy: Look for an item with an accuracy of ±1 yard or better.
  • Features: Some of them have features that are specifically designed for hunting, such as angle compensation and bow hunting mode. These features can be helpful, but they are not essential.

🔘 Once you have chosen it, be sure to read the instructions carefully to learn how to use it properly. We noticed that most rangefinders are very easy to use, but there are a few things you need to know in order to get the most accurate readings.

🔘  It is important to range your target before you shoot, even if you think you know how far away it is. This is especially important when shooting at long distances, where even a small error can result in a missed shot.

🔘 And one more thing to consider – they are very accurate, but they are not perfect. There are a few factors that can affect the accuracy, such as fog, rain, and snow. It is important to be aware of these limitations and to take them into account.

By following the tips above, you can learn how to use a rangefinder effectively for hunting.

FAQ ❓

What is the difference between Reflective vs. Nonreflective Distance?

📌 Reflective distance is the distance to a target that is able to reflect light, such as a metal object, a glass window, or a wet surface. Nonreflective distance is the distance to a target that does not reflect light well, such as a tree, an animal, or a dry surface.

As you know rangefinders work by sending out a laser beam and measuring the time it takes for the beam to reflect back to it. The item then uses this information to calculate the distance to the target.

Reflective targets are easier to detect than non-reflective targets because they reflect more light back. ⏭️ As a result, the units typically have a longer range for reflective targets than they do for non-reflective targets.

For example, an item with a maximum range of 1,000 yards for reflective targets may only have a maximum range of 500 yards for non-reflective targets.

⚠️ It is important to be aware of the difference between reflective and nonreflective distance when using a rangefinder. If you are ranging a non-reflective target, such as an animal, you need to be closer to the target than you would if you were ranging a reflective target.

What is angle compensation, and why is it important?

Angle compensation is a feature that adjusts the distance measurement to provide the true horizontal distance, taking into account the angle between the hunter and the target.

📐 Angle Compensation:  Angle compensation is like a virtual protractor that measures the angle between the hunter and the target. It takes into account the uphill or downhill angle and provides the true horizontal distance.

Let’s say you’re hunting on a hill and your target is below you. Without angle compensation, the rangefinder would measure the line-of-sight distance, which is shorter than the actual horizontal distance you need to calculate for accurate aiming.

With angle compensation, the rangefinder factors in the angle and calculates the distance as if you were shooting on a flat plane. This helps you adjust your aim and make more accurate shots, compensating for the effect of gravity on bullet trajectory.

In a nutshell:  Angle compensation is important because it provides the true horizontal distance, accounting for uphill or downhill angles. It helps hunters adjust their aim and make accurate shots, especially in varied or hilly terrains.

How do I maintain and care for my rangefinder?
🟦 Clean the Optics  Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the lenses. Avoid using abrasive materials, such as paper towels or tissues, as this can scratch the lenses. You can also use a lens cleaning solution to clean the lenses, but be sure to test it in a small area first to make sure it does not damage the lenses.
🟦 Keep it dry They are typically water resistant, but they are not waterproof. Avoid exposing your item to excessive moisture, such as rain, snow, or fog. If it does get wet, dry it off immediately with a soft cloth.
🟦 Store the rangefinder properly When you are not using it, store it in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing in direct sunlight or in extreme temperatures. When transporting, especially if you’re travelling with it, use a padded case or protective bag to safeguard it from damage.
🟦 Replace the batteries regularly  Over time, the batteries will lose their power. Be sure to replace the batteries regularly to ensure that your unit is always working properly. It’s a good practice to remove the battery if you don’t plan to use it for an extended period to prevent potential battery leakage.
How important is a rangefinder when hunting?

It is an extremely important tool for hunting. It allows you to accurately measure the distance to your target, which is essential for making ethical and effective shots.

As our tests have shown they can provide a much more accurate estimate of the distance to your target than our eyes can. ✔️ This is especially important when shooting at long distances, where even a small error can result in a missed shot or a wounded animal.

We think that it is unethical to shoot at an animal if you are not confident that you can make a clean and humane kill. ✔️ It helps you ensure that you are shooting at a distance that is within your capabilities.

Shooting an animal that is too far away can be dangerous, both for you and for the animal. If you miss, the bullet could travel a long distance and potentially harm someone or something else. ✔️ This item helps you avoid this by ensuring that you are only shooting at animals that are within a safe distance.

In addition to these, they can also be helpful for scouting and planning your hunt. For example, you can use a rangefinder to determine the distance to landmarks or to potential shooting lanes. ✔️ This can help you to plan your approach and to make the most of your hunting time.

Can I use a rangefinder for archery as well?

Yes, you can use it for archery as well. In fact, many rangefinders are now specifically designed for archery, with features such as angle compensation and bow hunting mode. They can provide a much more accurate estimate of the distance to your target than your eyes can. This is especially important when shooting at long distances, where even a small error can result in a missed shot.

Besides they can give you a distance reading in a matter of seconds, so you can quickly and easily determine the correct range to your target. This is especially important in hunting situations, where you may only have a few seconds to take a shot.

Last but not least important that they are much more consistent than human eyes at estimating distance. This means that you can be more confident in your range readings, and therefore more confident in your shots.

Conclusion ⌛

In conclusion, a rangefinder for hunting is a valuable tool for hunters that allows for precise distance measurements of targets. With advanced technology such as lasers or GPS, they accurately calculate the distance between the hunter and the target, aiding in making accurate shots. Features like angle compensation further enhance the capabilities by adjusting for uphill or downhill angles, providing the true horizontal distance.

They can be used in various hunting scenarios, from long-range hunting to archery, and they can be helpful in low-light conditions with features like backlit displays. Proper care and maintenance ensure its longevity and optimal performance. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or a beginner, incorporating a rangefinder into your hunting gear can greatly improve your accuracy and success in the field, making it a valuable tool for any hunting enthusiast. 🤩🛒

I bought this device(Bushnell) at a low price to measure ranges in the heavily wooded and mountainous terrain of the state forest near my hometown. I thought the 600-yard range advertised would be more than enough, but I only needed to measure up to ~300 yards. Unfortunately, the device did not perform as well as I hoped. Although it works fine up to 100 yards, it becomes unreliable beyond that range. Even if I aim at the same object repeatedly, the device gives me three different measurements, all of which are around 100 yards off from the correct distance.

⭕ Not all rangefinders are designed for long-range hunting. Some rangefinders have limited range capabilities, while others are specifically built for measuring distances over long ranges. When choosing a rangefinder for long-range hunting, consider the maximum distance it can measure accurately.
