How to safely and effectively use gloves as PPE 🔰

🧼🚰 Wash Hands: Before wearing gloves, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser. This ensures that your hands are clean before putting on the gloves.

🧤 Choose the Right Gloves: Select the appropriate type of gloves based on the specific task and hazards involved. Consider factors such as chemical resistance, puncture resistance, and compatibility with the substances you’ll be handling.

📏 Size Matters: Ensure that the gloves fit properly. Gloves that are too loose may slip off or hinder dexterity, while tight gloves can cause discomfort and decrease circulation. Refer to a size chart or consult with the glove manufacturer to find the right fit.

🖐️ Don and Doff Carefully: Put on gloves by carefully sliding them over your hands, ensuring a snug fit. Avoid touching the exterior surface of the gloves as much as possible. When removing gloves, peel them off from the wrist, turn them inside out, and dispose of them properly.

🧼🚰 Hand Hygiene: Gloves are not a substitute for hand hygiene. Regularly wash or sanitize your hands, even while wearing gloves, especially if you touch potentially contaminated surfaces or before handling clean objects.

⏲️ Time Limits: Avoid wearing gloves for extended periods, as prolonged use can lead to moisture buildup and discomfort. Change gloves when they become damaged, visibly soiled, or as per the recommended usage time for the specific type of gloves.

💦 Glove Integrity: Inspect gloves for any signs of damage, such as cuts, tears, or punctures, before use. Replace damaged gloves immediately, as they may compromise the protective barrier and expose your hands to hazards.

🚫 Avoid Cross-Contamination: Do not touch your face, mouth, or other non-work surfaces while wearing gloves. This minimizes the risk of transferring contaminants from surfaces to yourself or others.

🧪 Follow Procedures: Adhere to workplace protocols and procedures for glove usage. Some tasks may require specific glove-changing protocols, such as when moving from one work area to another or handling different types of materials.

🧹 Proper Disposal: Dispose of used gloves in designated containers or follow proper disposal procedures. Avoid littering or leaving gloves in common areas to prevent the spread of contaminants.

How do I choose the right size of gloves?
  1. 📏 Measure your hand: Use a tape measure or a piece of string to measure the circumference of your hand just below the knuckles. This measurement will give you an idea of the glove size that will fit you best.
  2. 🗒️ Check the size chart: Refer to the manufacturer’s size chart to determine the glove size that corresponds to your hand measurement. Size charts usually provide ranges or measurements for small, medium, large, and extra-large gloves.
  3. 🧤 Consider finger length: Some glove size charts also provide finger length measurements. If available, measure your finger length from the base to the tip and compare it to the size chart. This can help ensure a better fit and dexterity.
  4. 🤏 Try different sizes: If you’re unsure about your glove size, try on gloves in different sizes to determine the most comfortable fit. Pay attention to the snugness around your palm, fingers, and wrist. Gloves should fit snugly but not be overly tight.
  5. 🖐️ Consider the glove type: Different glove types may have different fit characteristics. For example, some gloves may be more flexible or stretchier than others. Take these factors into account when choosing the right size.
  6. 🔄 Trial and error: If possible, try on a sample pair of gloves in the size you believe is appropriate. Move your fingers and hand around to assess comfort, flexibility, and range of motion. This hands-on approach can help you determine if the gloves are the right fit.
  7. 📞 Seek guidance: If you’re uncertain about sizing, reach out to the glove manufacturer or supplier for assistance. They can provide additional guidance and recommendations based on their product’s specifications.
Can I reuse disposable gloves?

No, disposable gloves are designed for single use only and should not be reused. Disposable gloves are typically made from materials such as latex, nitrile, or vinyl, which may degrade or become compromised with repeated use. Reusing disposable gloves can increase the risk of cross-contamination and compromise their effectiveness as a barrier against potential hazards.

⭕ After each use, it is recommended to properly dispose of disposable gloves in designated waste containers and follow appropriate waste management protocols. It’s important to use a fresh pair of gloves for each task to maintain hygiene and minimize the spread of contaminants. If you need gloves for multiple tasks or extended periods, it’s advisable to have an adequate supply of disposable gloves available to ensure you can change them as needed.

What are the PPE glove categories?
  1. Disposable Gloves: These gloves are designed for single use and are commonly used in healthcare settings, food handling, and other industries where hygiene and contamination prevention are crucial. They are typically made of latex, nitrile, or vinyl.
  2. Medical Examination Gloves: These gloves are specifically designed for medical and healthcare professionals to provide a barrier against bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and other potential contaminants. They are typically made of latex, nitrile, or vinyl and comply with specific medical device regulations.
  3. Surgical Gloves: Surgical gloves are sterile gloves worn by surgeons and operating room personnel during surgical procedures. They provide a sterile barrier and help prevent the transmission of infectious agents between patients and healthcare workers.
  4. Chemical-Resistant Gloves: These gloves are designed to protect against exposure to various chemicals, including acids, solvents, oils, and corrosive substances. They are made of materials that provide resistance to specific chemicals, such as nitrile, neoprene, butyl rubber, or PVC.
  5. Cut-Resistant Gloves: Cut-resistant gloves are designed to provide protection against cuts, lacerations, and punctures in workplaces where sharp objects or tools are handled. They are typically made with high-performance fibres such as Kevlar, Dyneema, or stainless steel mesh.

They are used in industries such as welding, foundries, glass manufacturing, and kitchen operations. Heat-resistant gloves are made from materials such as leather, Kevlar, or specialized heat-resistant fabrics.

  8. Cold-Resistant Gloves: Cold-resistant gloves are designed to protect against extreme cold temperatures and prevent frostbite or other cold-related injuries. They are commonly used in industries like freezer work, cold storage, and winter outdoor activities.
Can I use latex gloves if I have a latex allergy?

🙅‍♀️🚫 If you have a latex allergy, it is generally not recommended to use latex gloves.

🧤😷 Latex gloves are made from natural rubber latex, which contains proteins that can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

🤧😖 These reactions can range from mild irritation and itching to more severe symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, or even anaphylaxis.

👍✅ Instead, consider using alternative glove options that are latex-free.

🙌✋ Nitrile gloves and vinyl gloves are two common alternatives that are suitable for individuals with latex allergies. They offer similar protective qualities to latex gloves without the risk of triggering an allergic reaction. These gloves provide a barrier against contaminants and are widely available in various sizes and thicknesses.

🔍💡 Always check the labelling or product specifications to ensure that the gloves are explicitly labeled as latex-free before use.

How should PPE gloves be properly removed?
  1. Hold the cuff: With one hand, grasp the outside of the glove near the wrist, holding it firmly.
  2. ☝️ Pinch and peel: Use your other hand to pinch the glove near the fingertips, creating a fold or grip. Peel the glove off, turning it inside out as you go, and continue rolling it down towards the cuff.
  3. 🌬️ Pull and remove: With the first glove now partially removed, slide your fingers underneath the remaining glove’s cuff, avoiding contact with the outside surface. Gently pull and peel the glove off, turning it inside out as well.
  4. ✅ Dispose of gloves: Dispose of the used gloves in the appropriate waste container. Avoid touching the exterior of the gloves to minimize potential contamination.
  5. 🧼🚿 Practice hand hygiene: After glove removal, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Alternatively, you can use hand sanitiser if soap and water are not immediately available.

I keep gloves in my kitchen to handle raw meat. This helps to save water and reduces the need for frequent hand washing.

I am thinking whether my gloves be reused if they appear undamaged.

      Reply to  Beny

❌ Reusing gloves, even if they appear undamaged, is generally not recommended. Over time, gloves can develop microscopic defects that compromise their integrity, and invisible contaminants may be present on the surface. It’s best to use new gloves for each task to ensure optimal protection.

I use such gloves managing situations where there are a lot of accidents with my cats poo. These are more convenient than rubber gloves since you can simply flip them inside-out when removing them and have a bag to throw away the used litter that’s covered in urine.
