What bullet drop of this ammo?

💥 The 7mm Remington Magnum (7mm Rem Mag) is a powerful and popular cartridge known for its flat trajectory and excellent long-range capabilities. Bullet drop refers to the decrease in the bullet’s trajectory as it travels downrange due to the force of gravity. Several factors influence bullet drop in the 7mm Rem Mag, including muzzle velocity, bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, and shooting angle. Here’s an explanation of how bullet drop works and its effects on shooting:

Muzzle Velocity and Bullet Weight: A bullet’s initial velocity (muzzle velocity) determines how fast it leaves the barrel. The higher the muzzle velocity, the flatter the bullet’s trajectory will be. Similarly, the bullet’s weight affects its trajectory. Heavier bullets tend to experience less bullet drop compared to lighter ones due to their higher momentum and resistance to wind.

Ballistic Coefficient (BC): The ballistic coefficient measures a bullet’s ability to maintain velocity and resist air drag as it travels downrange. Bullets with higher BC values experience less aerodynamic drag and, therefore, retain velocity better, resulting in flatter trajectories.

Distance to Target: As the bullet travels downrange, it starts to drop due to gravity. The longer the distance, the more pronounced the bullet drop will be.

Shooting Angle: Shooting at an upward or downward angle affects bullet drop. Shooting uphill causes the bullet to impact higher than the point of aim while shooting downhill causes the bullet to impact lower than the point of aim. The degree of impact shift depends on the angle and the distance to the target.

Sight-in Distance: Hunters and shooters often “zero” their rifles at a specific distance (e.g., 100 yards/meters). This means that at that particular distance, the bullet’s point of impact aligns with the point of aim. As the distance increases or decreases from the zeroed distance, the bullet will start to drop or rise accordingly.

Wind and Environmental Factors: Wind and atmospheric conditions can also influence bullet drop. Crosswinds, temperature, humidity, and altitude can affect the bullet’s flight path and should be taken into consideration for accurate shooting.

✒️ To compensate for bullet drop, shooters can use ballistic charts, ballistics calculators, or turret adjustments on their scopes. These tools help calculate the amount of bullet drop at different distances, allowing the shooter to make necessary adjustments to ensure accurate shots.

7mm Rem Mag vs 280AI: which is the GOAT?

💡 The comparison between the 7mm Remington Magnum (7mm Rem Mag) and the 280 Ackley Improved (280AI) is a common debate among shooters and hunters. Both cartridges are highly capable and have their unique strengths, but declaring a clear “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT) is subjective and dependent on individual preferences and shooting needs. Let’s compare these two cartridges to understand their characteristics:

🔐 7mm Remington Magnum:

✔️ Muzzle Velocity: It typically offers higher muzzle velocities than the 280AI due to its larger case capacity. This results in flatter trajectories and better energy retention at longer distances.

✔️ Bullet Selection: The 7mm caliber has a wide range of bullet options available, making it versatile for various hunting applications, including medium to large games.

✔️ Availability and Variety: It has been in the market since 1962 and has widespread availability, with a variety of factory loads from various ammunition manufacturers.

✔️ Recoil: The 7mm Rem Mag generates more recoil compared to the 280AI due to its higher muzzle velocities and energy.

✔️ Long-Range Performance: Due to its high muzzle velocities and long-range capabilities, the 7mm Rem Mag is well-regarded for long-distance shooting and hunting.

🔐 280 Ackley Improved:

✔️ Performance: It is a modified version of the .280 Remington, designed to increase its performance. It offers a flatter trajectory and slightly higher velocities than the standard .280 Remington.

✔️ Improved Brass: The 280AI requires fire-forming of standard .280 Remington brass to create its improved version. This process increases case capacity and contributes to its enhanced performance.

✔️ Recoil: The 280AI typically generates less recoil compared to the 7mm Rem Mag due to its slightly lower velocities.

✔️ Bullet Selection: While the bullet selection for the 280AI is not as extensive as the 7mm Rem Mag, it still offers a good variety of bullets suitable for hunting medium to large games.

❓ Deciding which cartridge is the “GOAT” between the 7mm Rem Mag and 280AI ultimately depends on the shooter’s needs and preferences. If someone values higher velocities, extensive bullet selection, and long-range performance, the 7mm Rem Mag may be the preferred choice. On the other hand, if someone appreciates improved performance, less recoil, and fire-forming their brass for better ballistic characteristics, the 280 Ackley Improved could be the top pick.

Last week, I had the exciting opportunity to purchase a T3x Lite Stainless barrel with a left-handed bolt. I found this gem “used” at a large chain store, and I couldn’t be happier with the find. It looks like it has never been fired, and there isn’t a scratch on it. Originally, I was hoping to get a rifle chambered in a .300 Winchester Magnum, as I was moving on from a .30-06 semi-auto that I inherited. However, when I found this T3x Lite in 7mm Rem Mag, I decided not to be picky, considering the scarcity of left-handed rifles. My current challenge now is finding ammunition for the 7mm Rem Mag.

I primarily shoot Nosler 7mm Remington Magnum Ammo 150 Grain, and I’ve been impressed with its performance. On multiple occasions, I’ve achieved sub-MOA groups with this particular factory load, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Based on my research and opinions from others, the Nosler Trophy Grade 7mm Remington Magnum Ammo 160 Grain I have for my 7mm Rem Mag will work for elk and moose hunting, but it may not be the best option available. Since finding specific ammo can sometimes be challenging, my advice is to go with what you can find that is designed specifically for hunting purposes.

I’m currently in search of a good 7mm Remington Magnum rifle, and I plan to eventually start handloading. However, I must admit that I’m not very skilled at handloading yet, so until I can consistently produce hand loads that outperform factory ammunition, I’m looking for a reliable load to practice with at long ranges. Ideally, I’d like to find a brand and bullet combination that is both accurate and affordable. Any recommended loads for the 7mm Rem Mag would be greatly appreciated as well. Finding the right combination that works consistently at long range and is suitable for elk hunting is my top priority.

I’ve hand loaded around 300 rounds of the 162 gr bullets using Nosler brass, IMR 4955 powder, and CCI primers, and they have performed exceptionally well. My brother had a remarkable experience with these hand loads, stopping an 8-point whitetail in its tracks at 400 yards during last season.

In my experience, 139-140gr bullets have been the standard for deer hunting, and they have proven to be effective. If the ammunition shoots well and is affordable, the deer won’t be able to tell the difference. For elk hunting, I would consider using a slightly heavier bullet, around 150-160gr, although the 140gr bullet would still get the job done. I’ve learned that the best ammunition for my gun may not necessarily be the best for someone else’s. It’s enjoyable to experiment with different loads, but it can also get expensive. I’ve found that sticking with what works, shoots accurately, and is within my budget is the most practical approach.
