What is 22 LR Ammo?💡

It stands for “22 Long Rifle,” and it’s the most popular and widely used rimfire cartridge in the world. The ‘LR’ in its name refers to its Long Rifle designation, which indicates its bullet length. This small but mighty cartridge packs a punch, making it ideal for various shooting applications like target practice, plinking, pest control, and even small-game hunting.

Anatomy🧪

📌 Bullet: The bullet, usually made of lead or copper-plated lead, is the projectile that exits the barrel and finds its mark downrange. The aerodynamic design ensures accurate flight and impact.

📌 Case: The case, typically made of brass, houses the gunpowder, primer, and bullet. It is sturdy, reusable, and plays a crucial role in proper chambering.

📌 Gunpowder: The gunpowder, or propellant, is responsible for launching the bullet with precision and power. Different loads of gunpowder cater to varying shooting needs.

📌 Primer: The primer, a small but mighty component, initiates the ignition of the gunpowder when struck by the firing pin, setting the entire process in motion.

How To Choose🌟

Selecting .22 Long Rifle ammunition involves a careful examination of several elements to ensure you pick an appropriate round for your particular needs and use cases.

✔️  You need to take in mind many factors. Firstly think about the primary application of the ammo that plays a significant role in your choice. For example, high-speed rounds are more suitable for hunting and pest control, whereas subsonic rounds are more desirable for target shooting due to their lower sound levels.

✔️  Besides please be aware that .22LR ammunition is available in different bullet types including hollow point (perfect for hunting due to their high stopping power), round nose (more appropriate for target shooting), and segmented (fragments upon impact, beneficial for pest control). And pay attention to a brand. It varies in their quality control standards. It’s generally wise to opt for a well-established brand known for its consistent reliability.

✔️  The weight of the bullet can influence its path and penetration power. Lighter bullets typically travel faster and are excellent for short-range shooting, whereas heavier bullets offer more stability and are suitable for long-range shooting scenarios. Although quality should never be sacrificed for cost, the price per round is an important consideration, especially if you intend to shoot often.

Keep in mind, finding the perfect ammo involves some experimentation. A round that performs exceptionally in one firearm might not yield the same results in another. Always keep safety, legal concerns, and your unique shooting needs at the forefront when making your selection.

Installation🧭

Reloading .22LR ammunition is a subject of debate among firearms enthusiasts. Due to its rimfire design, it’s more challenging and hazardous to reload than centerfire ammunition. For safety and practical reasons, most shooters typically do not attempt to reload .22LR cartridges. However, it’s essential to understand the process theoretically.

Materials Needed: The reloading process requires several materials, including empty brass cases, primers, gunpowder, projectiles, and reloading tools like a reloading press, dies, and callipers for measurement.

☑️ Step 1 – Inspecting the Casings: The first step is to inspect the spent casings for any signs of damage or wear. Any casings with splits, dents, or other types of damage should be discarded.

☑️ Step 2 – Cleaning the Casings: After inspection, the casings should be thoroughly cleaned using a tumbler or ultrasonic cleaner to remove any residual dirt or gunpowder.

☑️ Step 3 – Resizing the Casings: Once clean, the casings need to be resized using the appropriate resizing die.

☑️ Step 4 – Priming the Casings: Given the rimfire nature of .22LR, repriming the casing is a dangerous and often unfeasible step. This is one of the reasons why it is rarely if ever, reloaded by shooters.

☑️ Step 5 – Adding the Gunpowder: If you’ve achieved safe priming, you would then add a suitable type and quantity of gunpowder into each casing.

☑️ Step 6 – Seating the Projectile: The last step is seating the bullet into the casing using a bullet seating die.

Again, it’s essential to note that attempting to reload .22LR ammunition is generally discouraged due to the safety risks and the time-consuming nature of the process, especially considering the low cost of new ammunition. This information is provided for theoretical understanding and should not be taken as encouragement or guidance to reload .22LR ammo.

FAQ📖

What is the difference between 22 LR Ammo and 22 Short Ammo?

The main differences between .22 LR and .22 Short ammunition are:

  • Case length: The .22 LR case is 15.24 mm (0.60 in) long, while the .22 Short case is 13.97 mm (0.55 in) long.
  • Muzzle velocity: The .22 LR has a muzzle velocity of 1,074–1,422 ft/s (328–434 m/s), while the .22 Short has a muzzle velocity of 1,047–1,323 ft/s (319–404 m/s).
  • Energy: The .22 LR has an energy of 12–20 ft-lbs (16–27 J), while the .22 Short has an energy of 10–16 ft-lbs (14–22 J).
  • Accuracy: The .22 LR is generally more accurate than the .22 Short, due to its longer case and higher muzzle velocity.
  • Availability: .22 LR ammunition is more widely available than .22 Short ammunition.

In general, the .22 LR is a more powerful and accurate cartridge than the .22 Short. However, the .22 Short is less expensive and easier to find. It is important to note that both .22 LR and .22 Short ammunition can be safely used in firearms designed for either cartridge. However, it is not recommended to use .22 LR ammunition in a firearm designed for .22 Short, as the longer case may cause the firearm to malfunction.

How do I store 22 LR Ammo properly?

Proper storage of .22LR ammunition is essential to maintain its performance and longevity. Here are some dos and don’ts:

Dos

  • Use Ammunition Cans: Always store ammunition in a sturdy, airtight, and moisture-proof container. Military-style metal or plastic ammo cans with a rubber gasket seal are a popular choice.
  • Control Humidity: Use desiccant packets or a dehumidifier in the storage area to control humidity. Excessive moisture can lead to corrosion.
  • Store in a cool place: Choose a storage place with stable, cool temperatures. Excessive heat can degrade the gunpowder.
  • Keep it Organized: Keep your ammunition organized by type, calibre, and date of purchase. This practice helps in using the oldest ammo first.

Don’ts

  • Avoid High Temperature: Do not store your ammo in places with high temperatures like attics or car trunks. Overheating can lead to deterioration of the ammunition.
  • Avoid Moisture: Do not store ammo in damp places. Basements, if not properly dehumidified, can be risky.
  • Don’t Open Until Ready: Don’t open the original packaging until you’re ready to use the ammo. Original packaging provides an added layer of protection against environmental factors.
  • Don’t Mix Ammunition: Don’t mix different types or calibres of ammo. This can lead to confusion and potential accidents.

Remember, proper storage of ammo will ensure it

What is the Practical Ballistics for .22LR Ammo?

💠 At the heart of the .22LR’s ballistics lies its bullet, typically made of lead or copper-plated lead. The bullet’s weight, measured in grains (gr), plays a significant role in determining its flight characteristics and energy delivery. A typical .22LR bullet weighs between 30 to 40 grains. Due to its lightweight, the .22LR bullet experiences more pronounced effects from external factors like wind drift and gravity compared to heavier projectiles. As a result, its trajectory is not as flat, making longer-range shots a bit more challenging.

💠 The .22LR’s practical ballistics is highly influenced by its velocity, measured in feet per second (fps). It typically achieves velocities ranging from 1,000 to 1,300 fps, depending on the specific load. The relatively low velocity of the .22LR compared to larger calibres affects its performance at longer distances. In overextended ranges, the bullet’s energy may dissipate, reducing its effectiveness on targets.

💠 The .22LR’s practical ballistics excel at shorter to moderate distances, typically up to 100 yards. Within this range, it remains remarkably accurate, making it a popular choice for target shooting and small-game hunting. Beyond 100 yards, the bullet’s lower velocity and external influences start to impact accuracy and energy, making precise hits more challenging.

What's the difference between 22 LR Ammo and 22 Magnum (WMR) Ammo?

The .22 Long Rifle (LR) and the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR), also known as the .22 Magnum, are two distinct types of ammunition, each with unique characteristics.

⚪  The .22LR ammunition is renowned for its affordability, versatility, low recoil, and quieter noise level, making it a popular choice for beginners, training, and small game hunting. On the other hand, the .22 Magnum offers greater velocity and energy on impact, which translates to increased range and more lethal force. This makes the .22 Magnum more appropriate for hunting larger varmints and for self-defence situations.

🟥 However, .22 Magnum ammunition is typically more expensive than .22LR, and firearms chambered in .22 Magnum are usually heavier and larger. It’s also important to note that while .22LR ammo can be used in a wide variety of firearms, .22 Magnum ammo requires a firearm specifically chambered for it. Therefore, the choice between these two types of ammunition often depends on the specific needs and circumstances of the shooter.

What is 22 LR Ammo good for?

The .22 Long Rifle ammunition is good for a range of activities, each benefiting from its unique characteristics:

  • Target Shooting and Plinking: ➡️ Due to its low cost and manageable recoil, .22LR ammo is ideal for target shooting, plinking, and general practice. It enables shooters to improve their accuracy and shooting skills without breaking the bank.
  • Small Game Hunting: ➡️ The .22LR is perfect for hunting small game because of its effective performance at closer ranges. It can take down animals like rabbits, squirrels, and birds without causing excessive damage.
  • Pest Control: ➡️ The small calibre and quiet operation of .22LR ammunition make it suitable for pest control in suburban and rural areas, dealing with pests like rodents and small invasive species.
  • Beginner Training: ➡️ The .22LR’s low recoil and noise levels make it an excellent choice for beginner shooters. It allows newbies to get comfortable with shooting mechanics before moving to larger calibres.
  • Competition Shooting: ➡️ Specialized .22LR competition ammo is used in various shooting sports and competitions due to its ability to provide consistent performance and precision.
  • Survival Situations: ➡️ The .22LR’s lightweight nature allows for carrying large amounts easily, making it a sensible choice for survival situations or long-term wilderness trips.

Conclusion🚦

The .22LR Ammo may be small in size, but its practical ballistics packs a delightful punch! From plinking fun to small-game hunting and honing your shooting skills, the .22LR has proven itself as a versatile and beloved companion for shooters from all walks of life. Remember, while it may not be suitable for long-range sniping, the .22LR’s accuracy and low recoil make it perfect for a wide range of shooting adventures. So, load up your favourite rimfire firearm, enjoy the thrill of hitting targets with precision, and relish every moment of your shooting escapades! Happy shooting!

I own a Savage Mark II with a heavy barrel and an accu trigger and I’m considering participating in my club’s 22lr bench rest competitions. As a newcomer to the 22lr scene, my only experience so far has been using cci standards for hunting purposes.
Could anyone suggest suitable ammunition for 50-yard NRA small bore bench rest target shooting?

Do note that the priciest ammunition doesn’t necessarily guarantee the best performance. The “best” is highly subjective, depending on the specific rifle and the conditions on the day of the match. For your purposes, considering your rifle, I’d suggest purchasing and testing a brick of Eley Club. From my observation, Savage barrels tend to favor Eley over SK/Lapua. It’s not a hard and fast rule, though. Just a starting point for your exploration. Remember to clean the barrel before firing.

From my observations, setting a zero at 65 yards is most optimal for most 22LR loads. The maximum rise is roughly an inch or less, and at a distance of 100 yards, the drop is merely about 3-4 inches. Regardless of the zero point you decide on, it’s essential to use a range finder when shooting beyond 100 yards.

I find immense enjoyment in using .22’s, particularly when they’re suppressed, but when it comes to managing pests, my go-to is a .17HMR. The critters in my surroundings vary from small chipmunks to the occasional raccoon, and for these, the .17HMR polymer-tipped bullets by CCI prove to be highly effective. The impact is akin to a tiny grenade detonating just beneath the skin.

Can I shoot 22 LR Ammo in my 22 Magnum (WMR) firearm, or vice versa?

🛑 It is essential to use the correct ammunition for your firearm. 22 LR Ammo should never be fired in a firearm chambered for 22 Magnum (WMR) or vice versa. The dimensions and pressures of the two cartridges are different, and using the wrong ammo can lead to dangerous consequences.

🛑 While many firearms are chambered for .22 caliber, it’s essential to use the specific ammunition recommended by the manufacturer. Using the wrong ammo could lead to dangerous malfunctions or damage to the firearm.

Living in Brazil, a place notorious for its high crime rates, I’ve come to rely heavily on my 22LR for personal protection. The firearms in my possession range from a Walther P22, a Taurus TX22, to a semi-auto CBC rifle, known as Magtech in the US. The primary reasons for my choice in 22LR are the affordability of the ammunition, the ease with which my wife can operate these firearms, and the ability to store large quantities of ammo.
