Some of the factors that you might want to consider when choosing a black powder include the following:
- The type of gun you are using (rifle or pistol)
- The caliber of your gun
- The weight of your projectile
- The temperature and humidity conditions where you will be shooting
- Your personal preferences
If you are new to black powder shooting, we recommend that you talk to experienced shooters and ask them what type of powder they use and why. There is a lot of experience and knowledge out there, and the best way to learn is from those who have already been through the trial and error process. Once you find a powder that works well in your gun, stick with it!
If you are having difficulty finding a powder that works well in your gun, try contacting the manufacturer of your gun. They may be able to offer guidance or suggestions.

There is no such thing as the “best” black powder for muzzleloaders. Black powder is a general term that refers to several different types of gunpowder, each with its characteristics.
Some black powders are designed for use in firearms, while others are specifically meant for use in muzzleloaders. Some black powders are very fast-burning, while others are slow-burning. Some produce a lot of smoke, while others produce very little smoke.
The best black powder for any given firearm or muzzleloader will vary depending on the individual shooter’s preferences and needs.
Black powder is available in different grades, each with a different level of refinement. The three main grades of black powder are black powder, fine black powder, and super fine black powder.
Black powder is the least refined and most corrosive of the three grades. Fine black powder is more refined than black powder but less refined than super fine black powder. Super fine black powder is the most refined and least corrosive of the three grades.
For muzzleloaders, I would recommend using either fine or super fine black powder.
The best black powder to use is typically a type known as “goex” or “3f”. This powder is fairly consistent and has a good burn rate for most rifles. It’s also fairly easy to find online or at gun stores.
