What is Suppressor? 💡
It also commonly known as a silencer, is a device designed to reduce the noise and muzzle flash produced by firearms when they are discharged. It is typically attached to the muzzle of a firearm and works by trapping and dissipating the high-pressure gases that are expelled when a bullet is fired.
How does It work? ⚙️
When a firearm is discharged without a suppressing item, it produces a loud 🔊 “bang” sound, bright 🔥 muzzle flash, and strong recoil. When a bullet is fired, high-pressure gases 💨💥 are rapidly expelled from the barrel, creating a shockwave and generating noise. A suppressing item is designed to intercept and control these gases. It consists of an outer casing with internal chambers and baffles.
As the bullet exits the barrel, it enters the suppressing device, and the expanding gases are captured inside. The internal chambers and baffles within the suppressing item slow down and cool the gases, reducing their pressure and velocity.
💢🔇 This process helps to suppress the noise by preventing the rapid release of high-pressure gases, minimizing the intensity of the sound produced. They also reduce the muzzle flash by allowing the hot gases to dissipate and cool before exiting the device. Additionally, they help to mitigate recoil and muzzle rise, providing better control and accuracy to the shooter.
🌍📝 Remember, laws and regulations vary by jurisdiction, so always ensure you comply with local regulations when using or acquiring one.
Advantages 🌟
🔇🔊 Noise Reduction: They significantly reduce the sound produced by firearms when they are discharged. 🤫 This can help preserve hearing, minimize noise pollution, and enhance shooting comfort. |
🎯🔫 Improved Accuracy: They can aid in reducing recoil and muzzle rise, leading to improved accuracy. They help to stabilize the firearm, allowing for quicker follow-up shots and enhanced control over the weapon. |
🛡️👥 Hearing Protection: By reducing the sound of gunshot noise, they play a role in protecting the hearing of shooters and those nearby. 🚫👂 This is especially important for individuals who engage in frequent shooting activities. |
🌿🦆 Environmental Considerations: When used during hunting, suppressing devices can minimize the noise disturbance in natural environments, reducing the impact on wildlife and potentially enhancing the hunting experience. |
🔆💥 Muzzle Flash Reduction: They help to diminish the bright muzzle flash that is often associated with firing a firearm. This can be particularly beneficial in low-light situations, preserving night vision and minimizing the shooter’s visibility. |
⚖️🚓 Tactical Applications: In tactical situations, suppressing devices can provide tactical advantages by reducing the sound signature of firearms, making it more challenging for opponents to locate the shooter. |
How to Make a Gun Suppressor 🔑
Hardly amateur suppressing devices can exceed manufactured and tested ones. But if you do want to try to make this device at home, read the brief step-by-step guide below. Before proceeding, check whether a homemade silencer is not against your state’s regulations. Remember, such items are obliged to be registered otherwise they are illegal.
- 🟡 Measure the entire distance across the firearm barrel and its outer diameter.
- 🟡 You’ll need 2 PVC pipe pieces: 1-inch diameter is 12 inches long (will be a device barrel), and 2-inch diameter is 10 inches long.
- 🟡 Draw dots on a straight line with a 1⁄4-inch space between them on the barrel tube, turn it 90 degrees, and do the same.
- 🟡 Drill the throughout-pipe holes with a 3⁄16-inch drill bit and sand the pipe inside and outside.
- 🟡 Cut two end caps (use the outer diameter of a 1-in pipe and the inner one for a 2-in tube) with a jigsaw or scroll saw from a thick wooden piece.
- 🟡 Put this wooden cap between pipes, placing their edges flat, and glue it.
- 🟡 Fill the between-tubes space with heating insulation (steel wool or mattress foam), and place and glue the second end cap.
- 🟡 Fasten the longer 1-in pipe to the gun barrel with a hose clamp.
Before making a suppressor at home, evaluate, if it is worth these efforts and time. Perhaps, it is easier to purchase a ready silencer, which will be more reliable. Anyway, it’s up to you.

How to Attach a Suppressor To a Non-Threaded Barrel🔌
There can be a threaded or a non-threaded barrel on the firearms for suppressing device attachment, depending on the gun’s construction and brand. If you have no thread, follow the instruction to install the silencer successfully at home without a gunsmith.
- 🛑 Clean the working surface, and unload the gun.
- 🛑 Disassemble the gun with tools (if needed watch online manual), take out the slider and spring parts, as you need a barrel, and fasten it into the gun vice to have access to the muzzle.
- 🛑 To attach the silencer due to an adapter, tighten it around the barrel, screw it on, put some metal bonding agent to the muzzle outside, then secure the suppressing device, twisting it until it tightens around the muzzle.
- 🛑 You should wait for no less than 24 hours before shooting the firearm.
- 🛑 Apart from adapters, you can use locking or taper pins, and barrel bushing to secure the suppressing device.
Now you know how to save your money: no need to buy a new threaded-barrel gun or to go to the gunsmith to do a thread on the barrel.
How to Clean🧼
Cleaning is necessary for low-pressure ammo pistol silencers (every 750 rounds), as lead fouling and carbon build-up prevent the device from proper work, so the muffle devices lose inner volume and lack room for the gasses to calm down inside the can. .22 suppressing items become very dirty and need to be cleaned every 300-500 rounds.
- ✅ Do cleaning with gloves and a well-ventilated room, use gun solvent, nylon brush for aluminum parts, wooden stick, or stiff plastic to scrape carbon buildup off without scratching the parts.
- ✅ Check the materials and finish in the manufacturer’s manual to be sure not to harm them and choose the correct solvent. Don’t soak uncoated aluminum with Simple Green.
- ✅ Unload the gun, disassemble the suppressing item, and fully disassemble all its parts. You can take photos of silencer internals in assembly to check yourself after reassembling.
- ✅ Remove the end caps and push out the baffles (it can take some effort).
- ✅ Clean all parts, especially threads, from carbon or lead deposits.
- ✅ Check O-rings, they may need replacement.
- ✅ Properly reassemble everything, following the instruction.

My life has taken me through different complications and exciting moments, so what I’ve learned is to always be ready to fight. My father is professional military personnel and he made me familiar with various weapons since my childhood. My first one was a bow, and then I started to have a fancy for this unbelievable world of firearms. My main specialization allows me to share my thoughts about different devices, guns, and gun details with the English-speaking community. In my articles, I talk about pistols, rifles, knives, shotguns, and many other tactical and survival things.

Greetings! Do suppressors affect bullet velocity or accuracy?
✳️ Suppressors can have a slight impact on bullet velocity due to the added weight and the additional length the bullet travels inside the suppressor. However, the effect on accuracy is typically minimal or negligible. In some cases, suppressors can even improve accuracy by reducing recoil and muzzle rise.
I am planning to purchase a suppressor for my new 5.56 rifle. I intend to buy a pistol first and then convert it into an SBR by submitting Form 1 while waiting for the suppressor paperwork. I am looking for recommendations on the best overall suppressor performance within a budget of around $1,000 for my new rifle.
I’m afraid my response won’t be very helpful, but it will help you manage your expectations. Your question is similar to asking “Who should I date if I want a girlfriend?” The only difference is that any rifle-rated suppressor from a well-known manufacturer will likely satisfy what you’re looking for.
A 308 can with a 556 firearm is a good idea as it offers more flexibility. In my experience, Rugged cans such as Surge and Radiant have performed well.
Dead Air Nomad-30 is a lightweight and compact suppressor that is suitable for use with a 5.56 carbine. Despite being a 30 cal can, it has a larger volume than a 5.56 can and generally produces better sound quality. It weighs only 14 oz and is less than 7″ in length, so it won’t add much weight or bulk to your setup.
I want to add my opinion that a tubeless suppressor is the best choice. It’s important to choose a modern design from a reputable company. When selecting a suppressor, pay close attention to the mount because it’s more important than just looking at the decibel readings online. I personally recommend taper mounts because they have no moving parts and are very sturdy.
I prefer using 308 cans. In my opinion, unless someone uses a gas gun to kick doors for a living, dedicating a suppressor to 556 caliber is not worth the cost of a tax stamp. I don’t see any significant performance improvement with a 556 can over a 30 caliber can, even with a 556 end cap. This is especially true for short-barreled rifles where ear protection is necessary regardless of which can is being used.
I suggest using a magnum-rated can for your 7mm rem mag, 6.5×55, 7-08, and .308. The .300 wm rated can that I use works well with all four firearms. If weight is a concern for you, then a titanium can be a better option, but it can be costly due to the increased prices of raw materials over the past two years.
Is titanium necessary for accuracy? No. SS/Inconel suppressors can also be accurate but may cause a larger point of impact shift due to their weight. To get an estimate of the price range, visit Silencer Shop’s website, choose from their selection, and read reviews to make your decision.
Hello. Can I use the same suppressor on different firearms?
🟨 Some suppressors are designed to be multi-caliber or adaptable, allowing them to be used with different firearms. However, not all suppressors offer this capability. It is important to check the manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations to ensure compatibility.
