Ear Protection For Shooting

Features ⌛️

To help you make the best choice for your needs, it’s important to know the features of ear protection for shooting.

💣 Noise reduction rating (NRR) – This rating indicates how much sound is blocked out when wearing ear protection. The higher the NRR rating, the better the protection your ears will have from loud noises.
💣 Durability – Another essential feature. Selecting a durable pair of earmuffs or earplugs that can withstand repeated exposure to loud sounds is essential. Consider selecting waterproof materials that can withstand extremes of temperature and humidity if possible.
💣 Comfort – An often-overlooked factor, make sure you select earmuffs or earplugs that allow you to wear them comfortably for long periods without causing discomfort or pain in your ears. It’s also worth looking at whether they are adjustable so you can find the perfect fit for your ears.
💣 Type of protection – Earmuffs completely cover the entire outer ear in a protective casing, while earplugs plug into the ear canal and provide less coverage than earmuffs. It’s up to you to decide which type will offer you the best level of protection.

Benefits 🔥

Shooting can be an enjoyable and exciting activity, but it also poses a risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Fortunately, there are many ear protection options available for shooters that can help to reduce the risk of hearing loss while still allowing them to enjoy their sport safely.

  • ☑️ One major benefit is that it will help protect your hearing from potentially long-term damage. The louder the noise, the more potential damage it can do to your inner ear structures. The use of earplugs or other forms of ear protection will help reduce the amount of sound entering your ears and thus reducing the risk of permanent damage over time.
  • ☑️ Another benefit is that wearing protective equipment can dramatically improve focus and concentration at the range by blocking out noises that may otherwise be distracting. This can lead to improved performance as well as an overall more enjoyable experience. In addition, some ear protection devices are designed specifically to amplify softer sounds such as range commands from instructors or verbal cues from fellow shooters which can greatly improve communication on the range.
  • ☑️ Finally, wearing proper ear protection not only benefits you but also those around you by helping reduce volume levels in enclosed areas such as shooting ranges and gun clubs.

Types 📢

When it comes to protecting your ears while shooting, there are a few main types of ear protection available.

  • ✒️ The most popular and widely used type is foam earplugs. These are inexpensive, disposable plugs that fit into the ear canal to protect from loud noises. They are easy to insert and remove and come in different sizes depending on the size of your ear canal. Most foam plugs have a noise reduction rating (NRR) of up to 33dB, which is enough to protect against most gun blasts.
  • ✒️ Another popular option is electronic hearing protectors, which feature advanced technology that amplifies normal sounds while dampening louder noises from gunfire. These products usually include two speakers that sit inside the ear cups or muffs, allowing you to still hear conversations while providing adequate noise protection against gunshots. Electronic hearing protectors typically have an NRR rating of between 25-35dB, depending on the exact model.
  • ✒️ Finally, many shooters opt for custom earplugs that provide a tailor-made fit for maximum comfort and protection. These are typically made out of soft silicone or foam and designed with a flange that fits snugly into the ear canal to create a seal that blocks out most harmful noise levels from gunshots and other loud noises. Custom earplugs generally have an NRR rating of up to 33dB and can be easily removed when not in use.

No matter what type of ear protection you choose, make sure it is comfortable enough to wear for extended periods without any irritation or discomfort.

Should train with no hearing protection? 🤔

Many shooters believe that it is important to train with no hearing protection to become familiar with the sound of gunfire and better prepare for a high-pressure situation. While there is some truth to this, it’s important to weigh the risks and benefits before making a decision.

  • 🎯 On the one hand, training without ear protection can help you become accustomed to the loud sound of gunfire and improve your shooting accuracy. However, repeated exposure to loud noises without protection can damage your hearing permanently, leading to ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or even complete hearing loss.
  • 🎯 At the same time, keeping your distance from the firing line can also help protect your ears from excessive noise levels. If you are shooting indoors or at a range where other shooters are present, make sure you follow all safety protocols and keep your distance from other shooters.

➡️ When it comes down to it, training with no hearing protection should not be a regular practice for any shooter but instead, only be done on an occasional basis to become familiar with the sound of gunfire in a controlled environment such as a firing range or gun club.

FAQ 🤓

How much noise reduction for shooting?

🟣 The noise reduction provided by hearing protection devices for shooting, including earplugs and earmuffs, is measured using the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) system. The NRR indicates the amount of noise that the hearing protection device can effectively block out.

  • 📝 The NRR of shooting hearing protection devices can range from around 20 to 30+ dB. Keep in mind that the NRR is determined under laboratory conditions and may not fully account for real-world variables, such as fit and individual differences in hearing sensitivity.
  • 📝 To estimate the actual noise reduction you will experience, it is recommended to apply a derating factor to the NRR. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suggests subtracting 7 dB from the labeled NRR to obtain a more realistic estimate of the protection provided. For example, if a hearing protection device has an NRR of 30 dB, the estimated real-world noise reduction would be around 23 dB (30 dB – 7 dB).
Are earplugs or earmuffs better for shooting?

Whether earplugs or earmuffs are better for shooting depends on individual preferences, comfort, and the level of noise reduction desired. Both options offer effective hearing protection, and some people even choose to use a combination of both for additional noise reduction. Here are some considerations for each:

🛑 Earplugs:

  • 💠 Portability: Earplugs are small, lightweight, and easily portable. They can be conveniently carried in a pocket or bag, making them readily available when needed.
  • 💠 Comfort: Many people find earplugs comfortable, as they fit directly into the ear canal. They are less likely to interfere with the fit of safety glasses or other equipment.
  • 💠 Compatibility: Earplugs can be worn in conjunction with other headgear, such as helmets or communication devices, without much interference.

🛑 Earmuffs:

  • 💠 Ease of Use: Earmuffs are simple to put on and take off, making them convenient for quick and repeated use. They can be easily shared among multiple users.
  • 💠 Greater Noise Reduction: Earmuffs generally provide a higher level of noise reduction compared to earplugs, as they cover the entire ear and create a seal around it.
  • 💠 Fit Adjustments: Earmuffs typically offer adjustable headbands, allowing users to find a comfortable and secure fit.

😉 Ultimately, the choice between earplugs and earmuffs for shooting depends on personal preference, comfort, and the specific shooting environment.

What should I look for in-ear protection?

🟪 When selecting shooting ear protection, there are several key factors to consider to ensure effective hearing protection. Here are some important aspects to look for:

  • ✔️ Noise Reduction Rating (NRR): The Noise Reduction Rating indicates the level of noise reduction provided by the ear protection device. Look for products with a higher NRR, as it signifies greater noise reduction capabilities. However, remember to apply a derating factor of around 7 dB to the labeled NRR for a more realistic estimation of the actual noise reduction experienced.
  • ✔️ Fit and Comfort: The ear protection should fit properly and feel comfortable when worn. Look for options that offer adjustable features, such as headbands or earplug sizes, to achieve a secure and personalized fit. Comfort is crucial, especially during extended shooting sessions.
  • ✔️ Compatibility with Other Gear: Consider how the ear protection will work with other shooting gear you typically use, such as safety glasses, helmets, or communication devices. Ensure that the ear protection does not interfere with the proper fit or function of these items.
  • ✔️ Type of Ear Protection: There are various types of shooting ear protection, including earplugs, earmuffs, electronic ear muffs, and custom-molded earplugs. Choose the type that suits your preferences and shooting environment. Electronic ear muffs, for example, allow for communication and amplification of ambient sounds while blocking out harmful gunfire noise.
  • ✔️ Durability and Quality: Look for ear protection products that are well-built and made from durable materials. They should withstand regular use and provide long-lasting performance.
  • ✔️ Ease of Use: Consider how easy it is to put on, take off, and adjust the ear protection. Quick and hassle-free use is important, especially in dynamic shooting situations.
  • ✔️ Legal and Safety Compliance: Ensure that the ear protection you choose complies with applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards for shooting activities in your jurisdiction.
How long does ear protection last?

✴️ The lifespan of ear protection can vary depending on several factors, including the type of ear protection, frequency of use, care, and maintenance, and the specific manufacturer’s guidelines. Here are some general guidelines for the lifespan of different types of protection:

  • 🔷 Disposable foam earplugs are typically designed for single-use or limited-use applications. They are meant to be discarded and replaced after a certain period, usually after one or a few uses.
  • 🔷 Reusable earplugs, made from materials such as silicone or thermoplastic elastomers, are designed to be used multiple times. With proper care, they can last for several months or even years, depending on the quality and usage.
  • 🔷 Earmuffs, particularly those made with durable materials and components, can have a longer lifespan compared to disposable or reusable earplugs. With proper care and maintenance, earmuffs can last for several years.
  • 🔷 Electronic ear muffs or plugs, which often come with advanced features and electronics, typically have a similar lifespan to regular earmuffs. However, the electronic components may require additional care and attention.
How do shooting ear muffs work?

➡️ Shooting ear muffs work by providing a physical barrier between your ears and the loud sounds generated by gunfire or other high-intensity noise. Here’s a general overview of how they work:

  • 🧩 Outer Shell: The outer shell of shooting ear muffs is typically made of a durable material that helps block and absorb sound waves. It acts as a protective layer to prevent direct exposure of your ears to loud noises.
  • 🧩 Sound-Absorbing Material: Inside the ear muffs, there is a layer of sound-absorbing material, such as foam or padding. This material helps to dampen and reduce the intensity of the sound waves as they pass through it.
  • 🧩 Sealing and Cushioning: Shooting ear muffs are designed to create a seal around your ears. The cushioning material around the ear cups provides a comfortable fit while also assisting in blocking external noise from entering the ear canal.
  • 🧩 Noise-Blocking Design: The design of shooting ear muffs aims to minimize sound leakage and maximize noise reduction. The ear cups are typically larger and encompass the entire ear, providing a greater area for sound isolation.
  • 🧩 Headband and Adjustability: Shooting ear muffs have an adjustable headband that allows you to customize the fit and ensure a secure and comfortable position on your head. The headband also helps to maintain the seal and proper positioning of the ear cups.
  • 🧩 Passive Noise Reduction: Shooting ear muffs provide passive noise reduction, meaning they block out sound waves without using electronic or active noise-canceling technology. The combination of sound-absorbing materials, sealing, and cushioning helps to attenuate the sound levels before they reach your ears.

Conclusion 😊

When it comes to ear protection for shooting, there are many products available on the market. I currently own a Mpow 035 Noise Reduction Safety Ear Muffs. While the ear muffs are effective, I find them to be a bit bulky. On the other hand, the electronic earplugs offer the advantage of allowing me to hear ambient sounds while still providing some level of protection.

For most situations, properly inserted earplugs provide sufficient hearing protection, except when shooting indoors. It’s crucial to learn the proper technique for inserting earplugs to ensure optimal effectiveness. However, when it comes to hunting, I prefer using the Walkers Pro Low Profile Folding Ear Muff that can be conveniently hung around the neck for normal hearing and quickly put on when it’s time to take a shot. Ultimately, any reliable over-ear protection will suffice for hunting purposes.

However, it’s worth noting that entry-level electronic ear pro typically offers an NRR of around 22-23, which might not provide sufficient protection for larger caliber hunting rounds. For example, Howard Leight Electronic Shooting Earmuff (By Honeywell). For outdoor pistol rounds, they are usually adequate, but it’s advisable to double up with inexpensive foam earplugs underneath, as others have suggested. The choice of electronic ear protection largely depends on budget considerations.
