Features💹

When discussing the .22 Hornet, certain features set it apart from other cartridges.

❇️ First and foremost, its reduced recoil is appreciated by all, but particularly by new shooters making their initial foray into centerfire rifle shooting. The lower recoil offers a comfortable shooting experience, allowing time to build confidence and enhance accuracy.

❇️ Another commendable feature is its low noise report. Unlike larger calibres, it does not produce a loud report, making it a more subtle choice. This can be especially beneficial in areas where noise is a concern for nearby residents or wildlife.

❇️ The accuracy particularly at ranges up to 200 yards, is yet another feature that needs mention. This makes it an ideal choice for small game and varmint hunting, where precision is key.

❇️ Finally, it demonstrates excellent efficiency in terms of ammunition consumption. With proper handling and aim, hunters and shooters can achieve their objectives without the need for large volumes of ammunition. Thus, it is not just a versatile cartridge, but also an economical one.

Types🎯

Soft point ammunition. Designed to expand upon impact, it’s perfect for hunters looking for a quick, humane kill. The soft point allows for controlled penetration, ideal for small game and varmint hunting. Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) type. Renowned for its deep penetration and resistance to deformation, the FMJ is the go-to for target practice and competitive shooting. Its robust design ensures reliability, letting every shooter hit the mark with confidence. Hollow Point variant. This type is characterized by a hollowed-out shape at the tip, designed to expand upon hitting the target. The hollow point is a favourite among hunters, ensuring a high degree of accuracy and a swift, ethical kill.

Reloading ⚙️

Reloading can really create a sense of connection to the whole shooting experience. It’s like creating your own unique recipe in a kitchen, only this time, the recipe is for precision and accuracy. Let’s delve into the step-by-step reloading guide for this incredible cartridge:

📎 Step 1: Inspection: First and foremost, inspect your used brass for any signs of damage or excessive wear. Look for cracks, dents, or signs of head separation. This first step ensures the safety and reliability of your reloaded ammunition.

📎 Step 2: Cleaning: Next, clean your inspected brass. A vibratory tumbler with corn cob or walnut shell media works well here. Clean brass helps ensure smooth operation in your reloading dies.

📎 Step 3: Resizing: Now, it’s time to resize your brass. Lubricate your cases and run them through your sizing die according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The goal here is to return the brass to its original dimensions, ensuring a proper fit in your firearm’s chamber.

📎 Step 4: Removing the Primer: Use the depriming tool or the pin on your resizing die to remove the old primer. A small punch knocks it out of the pocket and the old primer should fall out easily.

Step 5: Repriming: Now, let’s put a new primer in place. A priming tool is used to seat the new primer firmly into the pocket of the case.

📎 Step 6: Charging the Case: This is where we add the powder. Choose a suitable powder for your .22 Hornet, ensuring to use the correct charge weight. Use a powder scale to ensure an accurate measure.

📎 Step 7: Seating the Bullet: Last but not least, seat your bullet to the correct depth using your bullet seating die. Now, you’ve got a reloaded .22 Hornet round, ready to deliver the same performance, reliability, and accuracy you’ve come to love.

This process may seem a bit intricate, but with a bit of patience, practice, and a dash of enthusiasm, reloading your .22 Hornet can be a rewarding experience. And remember, always follow manufacturer guidelines and prioritize safety when reloading. Happy reloading!

These firearms provide a broad spectrum of options for those using this ammunition, with choices varying from rifles to pistols, all characterized by their performance, reliability, and adaptability.

What is the difference between .22 Hornet Ammo Vs .22 LR Ammo?

There are several differences become evident.

  1. 🟡 Firstly, the .22 Hornet is a centerfire cartridge, meaning the primer is located in the centre of the cartridge case head. This allows for the .22 Hornet to have a higher pressure, hence a higher velocity, making it suitable for hunting small game and varmints at longer distances.
  2. 🟡 On the other hand, the .22 LR is a rimfire cartridge. The primer compound is spun into the rim of the cartridge case, which is crushed by the firing pin of the weapon to ignite the round. The .22 LR is popular for plinking and small game hunting at closer ranges, thanks to its low cost and lower noise level compared to the .22 Hornet.
  3. 🟡 In terms of size, the .22 Hornet is significantly larger than the .22 LR. This allows the Hornet to hold more powder, resulting in a higher muzzle velocity and energy, and thus a greater effective range.
  4. 🟡 Lastly, the cost is another critical difference. .22 LR ammunition is typically cheaper than .22 Hornet ammunition, making it more attractive for casual shooting and practice. However, the .22 Hornet’s superior performance and versatility often justify its higher price for many shooters.

While both their unique strengths, your choice between the two will ultimately depend on your specific requirements and shooting needs.

What is the difference between 22 Hornet vs 223 ammo?

There several aspects come into play.

🟨 Starting with the design, the .22 Hornet is an older cartridge, designed in the 1930s, while the .223 Remington, also known as 5.56mm NATO, is a more modern round, developed in the 1960s.

🟨 The .223 Remington is a centerfire cartridge, but it operates at a much higher pressure, which translates into a higher muzzle velocity. This gives the .223 Remington a flatter trajectory and a longer effective range, making it the preferred choice for longer-range varmint hunting and tactical applications.

🟨 In terms of bullet size, both use bullets of approximately the same diameter (~.224″), but the .223 Remington generally uses heavier bullet weights, which can provide better performance on larger games and in windy conditions.

Both ammo have their own strengths and ideal uses. The .22 Hornet’s lower recoil and quieter report make it excellent for small game hunting and target shooting at moderate ranges, while the .223 Remington’s higher velocity, flatter trajectory, and larger bullet weights make it more suitable for longer-range engagements and larger varmints. Your choice between the two will largely depend on your specific needs and preferences.

What is the bullet weight commonly used in .22 Hornet Ammo?
Commonly, .22 Hornet ammunition comes in bullet weights ranging from 35 to 55 grains. The 45-grain bullet is among the most popular, a balanced choice offering both accuracy and decent impact at a variety of ranges. The lighter 35-grain bullet delivers higher velocities and a flatter trajectory, making it an excellent choice for varmint hunting. Conversely, the heavier 55-grain bullet offers a slower speed but delivers a stronger punch upon impact, which could be more desirable for larger games or scenarios requiring deeper penetration. Therefore, the selection of bullet weight largely depends on the specific needs of the shooter.
Is .22 Hornet Ammo suitable for beginners?
It is often recommended for beginners due to its manageable recoil, affordability, and versatility. The low recoil allows novice shooters to learn and master the fundamentals of shooting without being intimidated or discomforted by heavy kickbacks.

Moreover, it is versatile enough to be used for both target practice and small-game hunting, providing a well-rounded shooting experience for newcomers.

However, the availability and cost of this ammunition can vary, and it might not be as readily available or as inexpensive as some other calibres, like the .22 LR. Therefore, while it’s suitable for beginners, the choice would heavily depend on the individual’s budget, availability of ammo, and their intended use.

Conclusion🤩

In conclusion, the .22 Hornet Ammo stands out as a versatile and efficient cartridge for a range of shooting activities, from hunting to target shooting. Thanks to its unique features—low recoil, subdued noise, pinpoint accuracy and economical usage—it’s an excellent choice for both novice and experienced shooters. Furthermore, the ability to reload this cartridge adds a layer of hands-on involvement and customization that many shooting enthusiasts find rewarding. With choices ranging from soft point to full metal jacket to hollow point ammunition, the .22 Hornet offers a solution tailored to every shooter’s needs. It’s more than just ammunition—it’s a testament to innovation and versatility in shooting technology.

Greetings! Can .22 Hornet Ammo be used for self-defense?

          Natalia
          Reply to  Romio

While it is technically possible to use .22 Hornet Ammo for self-defense in a dire situation, it is generally not recommended or considered ideal for this purpose. The .22 Hornet cartridge is primarily designed for small game hunting, varmint control, and target shooting.

🟣 The main concern with using .22 Hornet Ammo for self-defense is its relatively low stopping power. Compared to larger and more potent defensive cartridges like 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP, the .22 Hornet lacks the necessary energy to consistently and effectively stop an assailant quickly. It may not penetrate deeply enough to reach vital organs or incapacitate an attacker effectively.

🟣 In self-defense situations, the goal is to stop a threat as quickly and efficiently as possible. Larger calibers with more significant stopping power are generally preferred as they have a better track record of quickly neutralizing threats.

It’s likely that you’ll find the combination of 13.0 Grains Hodgon Lil-Gun and Sierra 45 Grain soft points, also known as ‘Hornet Bullets’, to be very effective.
My father and I conducted an analysis where we bisected a 45 Grain ballistic tip and a 40 Grain hornet bullet. We discovered that the Hornet Bullets have a comparatively thinner jacket, suggesting they might expand more efficiently at Hornet velocities, ranging from 2500 fps to 2900 FPS.

The combination of 13.0 grains of Lil Gun alongside a 40gr V-Max has proven to be incredibly effective in my Savage M40. Interestingly, the same load functions with comparable or even superior precision in my friend’s Savage M40. After testing approximately a dozen of these loads on a chronograph, they yielded an average speed of 3,029 FPS. This is a stellar performance for a modest .22 Hornet. I am confident that this should be satisfactory against a coyote.

If you’re shooting with a rifle, be aware that certain bullets may not be suitable due to their length. While some V-maxs or BTs may provide good accuracy, they are better suited to higher velocities than a hornet can achieve. From my own experience, the 35 grain V MAX offers decent precision, but its velocity drops off quickly due to its shape. Currently, my preferred bullet is the Sierra 40 grain hornet. For heavier bullets, Lil Gun powder has proven effective, while H110 is better paired with lighter ones. You’ll notice that even a minor fluctuation of a tenth or two in powder grain can significantly impact both accuracy and pressure—so caution is advised. I’ve had success using 13.2 grains of Lil Gun with the 40 grain. Be cautious with the hornet—it can be quite captivating.
