What are the Types? 👁🗨
Scope mounts come in various designs and configurations to accommodate different types of firearms and scopes. 🔔 After deep research, our team revealed the most common types:
🔰 Picatinny Rail: The Picatinny rail, also known as a MIL-STD-1913 rail, is a standardized mounting system that features a series of evenly spaced slots. These slots allow for the attachment of various accessories, including scope rings or mounts. The advantage of Picatinny rails is their versatility, as they can accommodate different types of scopes and other accessories.
🔰 Dovetail Mount: Dovetail mounts use a tapered slot design for attaching scopes. The mount typically has two parallel grooves that match the corresponding grooves on the scope rings. By sliding the scope into the mount and tightening the rings, the scope becomes securely attached.
🔰 Weaver Rail:Similar to the Picatinny rail, the Weaver rail is another popular mounting system. It features a series of parallel slots, but the slots are slightly narrower than those on a Picatinny rail. Weaver rails are compatible with Weaver-style scope rings, which are commonly used for mounting scopes.
🔰 Integral Mount: Some firearms, particularly rifles, come with integral mounts built into the receiver or the barrel. These mounts are specifically designed for the firearm and may require specific scope rings or bases for attachment.
The Integral Mounting System ensures keeping securely the scope in place on the most powerful AR rifles. Punisher Tested mounts can operate in severe conditions, withstanding even strong recoil.

1️⃣ Before starting the installation, empty the rifle, unload it, and the safety is on. The bubble level will be necessary and important at every mounting stage to make proper scope installation.
2️⃣ Define the comfort distance from the scope to your eye.
3️⃣ Fix the firearm tightly in the shooting rest to ensure its stability. The mount should be placed on the AR-15 rifle top and tighten its screws: first by hand then with the torque wrench, controlling the parallel and perpendicular levels by loosening or tightening the screws. ⚠️ Don’t over-tighten them, check the torque limit in the instructions.
4️⃣ After attaching the mount, the scope should be placed on the mount rings, on peer and flat areas on each side, and tighten (to about 80%) the screws with the hex bit screwdriver. Adjust the scope of eye relief.
5️⃣ The last step is to level the scope one more time, checking the parallelism and perpendicularity, and finally tightening the mount ring screws, paying attention to the reticle alignment to an object.
😃 That’s all, have an accurate shooting with a duly installed scope mount.
FAQ 🤔
What size scope rings do I need for an AR 15?
⭕️ The size of scope rings you need for an AR-15 depends on the diameter of the scope’s main tube and the height of the rifle’s rail or base. After deep research, our team revealed that the most common scope tube diameters for AR-15 rifles are 1 inch and 30mm, although there are other sizes available as well.
💡 To determine the appropriate size of scope rings for your AR-15, follow these steps:
🔹 Measure the diameter of your scope’s main tube: Using a caliper or a ruler, measure the diameter of the scope’s main tube. Make sure to measure the outside diameter.
🔹 Determine the height of your rifle’s rail or base: The height of the rail or base will determine the ring height you need. Measure the distance from the top of the rail or base to the center of the bore.
🔹 Choose the appropriate ring size:Once you have the measurements, you can select the appropriate scope rings. Most scope ring manufacturers provide size options for both tube diameter and ring height. Look for rings that match your scope’s tube diameter and provide the desired height for proper alignment and clearance.
🔔 It’s worth noting that there are also scope mounts available that combine the rings and base into a single unit. These can simplify the installation process and provide a solid mounting solution.
⚠️ Remember to consult the manufacturer’s specifications for both your scope and rifle to ensure compatibility and proper fitment. Additionally, if you’re unsure or need assistance, it’s always recommended to consult with a knowledgeable gunsmith or an expert in optics.
What Is A 20 MOA Scope Mount?
🔎 A 20 MOA (Minutes of Angle) scope mount is a type of mount used in the long-range shooting to compensate for bullet drop over long distances. 📢 MOA is a unit of angular measurement commonly used in firearms to describe the adjustment or movement of a bullet’s point of impact.
➡️ In this context, the term “MOA” refers to the amount of additional elevation adjustment built into the mount. A standard mount typically has no additional built-in adjustment and is considered “0 MOA.” On the other hand, a 20 MOA mount has a built-in upward angle of 20 minutes of angle, tilting the scope slightly downward.
🔐 The purpose of this is to provide extra elevation adjustment range for long-range shooting. When a shooter needs to engage targets at extended distances, the bullet drop becomes more significant. By using a 20 MOA mount, the scope is angled downward, allowing the shooter to use the internal elevation adjustment of the scope to compensate for the bullet drop more effectively.
📝 Based on the results of our testing a 20 MOA scope mount is not necessary for all shooting scenarios. It primarily benefits long-range shooting applications where precise bullet drop compensation is required. For shorter distances or when shooting flat-shooting cartridges, a 0 MOA mount or mounts with lower angles may be more appropriate.
Do I need to lap scope rings?
🛑 Our experts explored and figured out that lapping scope rings is not always necessary, but it can be beneficial in certain situations.
📌 The primary purpose of lapping scope rings is to ensure proper alignment and contact between the rings and the scope tube, which can help improve the overall performance and accuracy of your scope setup.
📢 Here are a few factors to consider when deciding whether or not to lap your scope rings:
➔ Quality of the rings: Higher-quality scope rings, especially those from reputable manufacturers, are usually manufactured to tighter tolerances, resulting in better alignment and less need for lapping. If you have high-quality rings, lapping may not be necessary.
➔ Alignment issues: If you’re experiencing alignment problems with your scope, such as the reticle not aligning properly with the barrel, lapping the rings can help correct these issues. Lapping can remove small imperfections and irregularities in the ring surfaces, ensuring a more precise alignment.
➔ Precision shooting: If you’re engaging in long-range precision shooting or require utmost accuracy, lapping the rings can provide better contact between the rings and the scope tube, minimizing stress and maintaining consistent alignment. This can lead to improved shot placement and consistency.
➔ Scope tube material: Lapping is generally more relevant for aluminum scope tubes than for steel ones. Aluminum is a softer material and can be more prone to slight variations or irregularities, which lapping can help address.
🔔 Ultimately, whether or not you need to lap your scope rings depends on the specific factors mentioned above and your shooting requirements. Assess your setup, consult the manufacturer’s recommendations, and consider seeking expert advice if needed.
What is the proper torque for scope rings?
💡 The proper torque for scope rings can vary depending on several factors, including the specific manufacturer’s recommendations, the type of firearm, and the material of the scope rings.
🔧 In general, when mounting scope rings, it is important to achieve an even and secure grip without over-tightening, as excessive torque can damage the scope of the firearm. 🤷🏽♂️ However, without specific information about your scope rings, it is challenging to provide an exact torque value.
🔧 To give you a rough idea, torque values for scope rings usually range between 15 to 25-inch pounds (1.7 to 2.8 Newton meters). Use a torque wrench or a torque screwdriver specifically designed for firearm applications to ensure accurate and consistent torque application.
💁🏾♂️ It’s always best to consult the manufacturer’s instructions or guidelines for the particular scope rings you are using. They typically provide the recommended torque specifications for optimal performance and to avoid damage.
Can I use scope mounts for other accessories?
🤔 Scope mounts are primarily designed to attach scopes or optics to firearms, providing a stable and secure platform for aiming and shooting. 💁🏾 However, after a proper examination, our team came to the conclusion that in some cases, they can be repurposed or modified to accommodate other accessories, depending on their design and compatibility.
📍 Here are a few examples:
☑️ Red Dot Sights: Many red dot sights have similar mounting systems as scopes. If the scope mount and the red dot sight have compatible mounting interfaces, it may be possible to use this to attach a red dot sight to a firearm.
☑️ Laser Aiming Devices: Some laser aiming devices come with mounts that can be attached to scope rails. If the laser device’s mount is compatible with the mount’s rail system, it could be mounted using the scope mount.
☑️ Tactical Lights: Certain options feature additional accessory rails or slots on their sides or underneath. These can be used to attach tactical lights, provided they have compatible mounting interfaces.
☑️ Action Cameras or GoPro: Some variants, particularly those designed for rifles, may have enough space or adapters to attach action cameras or GoPro-style devices for recording your shooting sessions or hunting trips.
⚠️ Notethat repurposing a scope mount for other accessories might require modifications or additional adapters to ensure a secure and proper fit. ⚖️Compatibility between the mount and the accessory should be carefully considered to avoid any safety or functional issues.
Conclusion ⏰
It is important to find the best scope mount for AR 15s that fits your needs. After reading this guide, you should have a better understanding of what features and benefits are available in different types of mounts. I’m really pleased with my LH Stag Arms AR10 chambered in .308. The Leupold Mark mount I purchased has been outstanding—solid as a rock and worth every penny. It positions the scope conveniently away from the charging handle, and when I bring the rifle up to shoot, my 3×9 40mm scope lines up perfectly. It’s a fantastic combination that enhances my shooting experience.
I experimented with various rings and mounts for my Daniel Defense AR-15 rifle, and unfortunately, the Weaver X-high rings didn’t provide the necessary height for a comfortable cheek alignment. Additionally, the Aero rings tended to cause the scope to twist, making it challenging to maintain a proper vertical crosshair. Nevertheless, I did come across this mount that I was particularly impressed with. It boasted an ideal height, exceptional craftsmanship, and effortless installation process.
I must say, this mount is truly exceptional when it comes to quality and reliability for your rifle. It’s incredibly easy to install and provides a remarkably stable platform. In fact, I find it to be of slightly higher quality than a comparable Aero Precision mount. It maintains a perfect zero, which is a testament to its superior performance. I highly recommend it without any reservations.

I have previously used various precision mounts, but this was my first experience with the Geissele Super Precision mount. Initially, I had reservations about its cost, but the moment I unboxed it, I knew I had made an excellent choice. I required a mount that provided a distance of approximately 1.5 inches from the top of the rail to the center of the scope tube to accommodate my 34 mm main tube scope with a 56mm objective on a 40moa base. Other mounts I had considered were either too low or too high, and surpassing the 1.5-inch mark was not desirable for me.
When I began mounting the scope, I discovered that I didn’t need to lap the rings at all. The mount’s exceptional craftsmanship ensured that the inside of the rings was uniformly smooth throughout. The recoil lugs on the mount’s underside were sized perfectly to fit into the rail slots, eliminating the need to manually hold the mount forward against the recoil lug during the mounting process. Without a doubt, this mount is worth every penny, and I am already planning to use it on future rifles.
Although this mount comes with a higher price tag, it is undeniably worth the investment. I did contemplate cheaper alternatives initially, but I made the decision to go for it and pay a bit more. Let me assure you, it was absolutely worth it. While Geissele does produce some overpriced items that may not live up to expectations, this mount is an exception, and I highly recommend it.
The machining of the mount is exceptional, exhibiting fine craftsmanship. Its tight lock-up ensures a secure and stable connection. I couldn’t have asked for more in terms of performance and quality.
I recently purchased this to attach my Vortex x1-6 scope to my 14.5″ SOCOM upper. As expected from Geissele, the quality of this mount is excellent. It strikes a perfect balance between solidity and lightweight design. However, if you plan on using Night Observation Devices (NODs), I would recommend considering the taller version for optimal compatibility. Geissele’s reputation for quality shines through in this mount.

The Steiner AR15 mount is an exceptional piece of craftsmanship. It proudly represents the quality and reliability associated with products made in the USA. Its robust construction, durability, and sleek appearance make it a top-notch choice. Rest assured, this mount guarantees the security and stability of your scope without any concerns.
The Geissele Super Precision series stands out as an exceptional scope mount, widely regarded as one of the finest available. Its consistent ability to maintain zero and its precision machining make it a top choice among shooters. Personally, I’ve utilized this mount with great success on three distinct rifles, consistently achieving reliable zero adjustments. If the price seems a bit steep, keep an eye out for sales, but rest assured that the investment is well worth it.
Can I co-witness iron sights with a red dot sight using a scope mount on an AR 15?
✅ Yes, it is possible to co-witness iron sights with a red dot sight by using a scope mount with an elevated or extended rail section. 💡This allows you to maintain the functionality of your iron sights as a backup while utilizing the benefits of a red dot sight.
I found the Leupold AR mount to be an exceptional choice for my new build, specifically a 350 Legend upper. With its 1″ scope base, I easily attached my older VX11 AO scope, which has a 2″ diameter objective. The installation process was straightforward, thanks to the user-friendly design and reliable torque screws. When I took it to the range, I was thrilled with the outstanding results. It was incredibly enjoyable to hit steel targets at 100 yards with precision and accuracy. Furthermore, considering the attractive price point, the Leupold AR mount proves to be a top-quality option that exceeded my expectations.
What are the potential drawbacks of using a cantilever scope mount on an AR 15?
⭕️ Some potential drawbacks of using a cantilever scope mount on an AR-15 include:
▪️ Added Weight: Cantilever mounts are typically heavier than traditional scope mounts. This extra weight can affect the overall balance of the rifle and may make it less maneuverable.
▪️ Increased Height: Cantilever mounts raise the optic higher above the bore axis of the rifle. This can lead to a higher sight over bore offset, potentially impacting the rifle’s point of aim and point of impact at different distances.
The Vortex 30mm Cantilever mount is exactly what I was looking for, and it surpassed my expectations with its straightforward design. It fits perfectly on my rifle and securely holds my Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 (OPMOD) scope. I am extremely satisfied with the exceptional quality of this product, and my overall experience has been top-notch.
Perfect match for my AR with the Vortex OPMOD Strike Eagle 1-8 x 24mm Rifle Scope. Initially, I was unsure whether to opt for the 2-inch offset or the 3-inch offset. However, after conducting some research, I concluded that the 2-inch offset would suffice and maintain a more compact setup. After mounting the scope with the chosen offset, I am extremely pleased with my decision. This mount and scope combination has exceeded my expectations, and I am thoroughly satisfied with it.
