How to choose the right ammo?🔍

Choosing the .460 S&W ammunition involves careful consideration of several factors to ensure that you’re getting ammo that suits your specific shooting needs and preferences. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make an informed choice:

➡️ Purpose of Use: Determine your primary purpose for using it. Are you planning to hunt large game, engage in target shooting, or consider it for self-defense where legal? Different bullet types and weights are optimized for specific applications.

➡️ Bullet Type: Decide on the type of bullet that best aligns with your intended use:

Hollow Points: Ideal for hunting, as they offer controlled expansion and energy transfer upon impact.

Hard-Cast Bullets: Suitable for hunting and penetration, especially for tough games.

Other Varieties: Consider specialty bullets like frangible or bonded bullets if they align with your shooting goals.

➡️ Game Consideration: If you’re using such ammo for hunting, research the specific game you’ll be pursuing. Ensure that the ammunition you choose provides sufficient energy and terminal performance for ethical and effective kills.
➡️ Recoil Management: Be prepared for substantial recoil when shooting. Ensure you’re comfortable with managing recoil, especially if you’re new to high-powered cartridges.
➡️ Firearm Compatibility: Confirm that the ammunition you’re considering is compatible with your firearm’s chamber specifications. Using the wrong ammunition can be dangerous and cause damage to your firearm.
➡️ Manufacturer and Brand: Opt for reputable and well-known ammunition manufacturers that have a track record of producing quality and consistent cartridges. Research user reviews and feedback to gauge the performance of specific brands.
➡️ Bullet Weight and Velocity: Consider the bullet weight and velocity that align with your shooting preferences. Heavier bullets may offer greater penetration, while lighter bullets may yield higher velocities and flatter trajectories.
➡️ Cost and Availability: Factor in the cost of the ammunition and its availability in your area. While it’s essential to find ammunition within your budget, prioritize quality and performance.

📌 By carefully considering these factors, you can choose ammo that aligns with your shooting goals, provides optimal performance, and enhances your overall shooting experience.

FAQ🤓

What is this ammo good for?

🟣 The .460 S&W cartridge is well-suited for a variety of shooting and hunting applications due to its impressive performance characteristics. Here are some of the primary uses:

🔶 Hunting Big Game: It is known for its exceptional stopping power and high energy upon impact, making it effective for hunting large and dangerous games. It is often used for hunting animals such as elk, moose, bear, boar, and other similar-sized game.

🔶 Long-Range Shooting: With its high muzzle velocity and flat trajectory, the .460 S&W is capable of delivering accurate shots at extended distances. This makes it a suitable choice for hunters who may need to take shots at longer ranges.

🔶 Recreational Shooting: Enthusiasts who enjoy the powerful recoil and visceral shooting experience of a large-bore handgun may use it for recreational shooting, target practice, and competitions.

🔶 Handgun Hunting: The .460 S&W is particularly popular among handgun hunters who prefer the challenge and excitement of pursuing a game with a handgun rather than a rifle.

🔶 Wilderness Defense: For those who venture into areas with potential encounters with large predators, this ammo can offer a level of protection and confidence against such threats.

📌 It’s important to note that the .460 S&W generates significant recoil, which may be challenging for some shooters to manage.

What is the maximum range of it?

✔️ The maximum effective range of the .460 S&W ammunition can vary depending on several factors, including the specific load, bullet type, barrel length, shooting conditions, and shooter’s skill.

🎯 Generally, this cartridge is capable of delivering accurate shots at distances of up to 150 to 200 yards (approximately 137 to 183 meters) for experienced shooters under favorable conditions.

📌 However, it’s important to note that the .460 S&W is primarily designed for relatively short to medium-range engagements, particularly in hunting and self-defense scenarios. While the cartridge has a relatively flat trajectory and high muzzle velocity, its energy and accuracy start to diminish significantly beyond certain distances.

How big is a 460 bullet?

✴️ The .460 S&W is a powerful handgun cartridge that boasts impressive ballistics and stopping power. Central to its design is the bullet size, commonly referred to as caliber, which significantly influences its performance and applications.

Bullet Diameter: The bullet features a diameter of .452 inches (11.48 mm). This diameter places it within the standard range for many handgun cartridges, including both revolvers and single-shot pistols. This specific caliber size is chosen for a balance between bullet weight, velocity, and overall cartridge dimensions.

The versatility of Caliber: The .452-inch caliber is a versatile choice that allows for a wide range of bullet designs and weights. Different bullet types, such as hollow points, soft points, and hard-cast bullets, can be used within this caliber to achieve specific performance characteristics.

How to reload such ammo?

📝 Reloading ammunition requires careful attention to detail, safety precautions, and adherence to recommended guidelines. Here’s a general overview of the reloading process:

💣 Gather Equipment and Components: reloading press, .460 S&W brass cases, primers (appropriate for .460 S&W), powder (as per load data), bullets (appropriate for .460 S&W), reloading dies (specific to .460 S&W), calipers (for measuring cartridge dimensions), powder scale, powder dispenser, case trimmer (if necessary).

💣 Clean and Inspect Brass: Clean used brass cases to remove dirt, debris, and residue. Inspect cases for signs of damage or wear, such as splits or cracks. Ensure they’re within proper specifications for length.

💣 Resize and Deprime: Use resizing dies to reshape the brass case back to the proper dimensions. Remove the spent primer using a decapping pin.

💣 Prime Cases: Insert fresh primers into the primer pocket of each resized case. A priming tool can help ensure consistent primer seating.

💣 Charge Powder: Use a powder dispenser and scale to carefully measure and dispense the appropriate powder charge for the specific load you’re using. Follow the load data from reliable sources.

💣 Seat Bullet: Use a bullet seating die to position the bullet at the proper depth within the case. This affects overall cartridge length and chamber fit.

💣 Crimp (Optional): If desired, use a crimping die to apply a slight crimp to the case mouth. This helps secure the bullet in place and can enhance accuracy.

💣 Inspect and Test: Visually inspect each loaded cartridge for proper assembly, consistent powder charges, and overall quality. Use calipers to check cartridge dimensions, ensuring they meet specifications.

💣 Record Data: Keep detailed records of your reloading data, including powder type, charge weight, bullet type, seating depth, and any other relevant information.

💣 Test Fire: When you’re ready to test your reloaded ammunition, do so in a safe and controlled environment. Begin with a conservative load and gradually work up to find the most accurate and safe load for your firearm.

Can a firearm chambered for 460 shoots 45 ACP?

🤨 No, it cannot shoot .45 ACP ammunition. The two cartridges are not compatible due to significant differences in size, pressure, and dimensions.

🛑 Attempting to fire .45 ACP ammunition in a firearm chambered for .460 S&W could lead to dangerous consequences, including damage to the firearm and potential injury to the shooter.

🛑 The .460 S&W is a much larger and more powerful cartridge compared to the .45 ACP. It has a longer case, higher pressure, and a larger diameter bullet. The .460 S&W is designed for use in specific firearms capable of handling its power, such as revolvers designed specifically for the cartridge.

❗ Always ensure that you use the correct ammunition that matches the firearm’s chamber specifications. Using the wrong ammunition can have severe safety implications, so it’s essential to follow manufacturer recommendations and only use ammunition that is explicitly designed for your firearm.

Conclusion😊

In conclusion, the .460 S&W is a highly potent and versatile ammunition cartridge suitable for various applications, particularly hunting and self-defense. Its notable features include a considerable effective range, impressive stopping power, and significant bullet size, contributing to its overall performance. To all you gun enthusiasts, if the firearm chambered in .460 S&W has piqued your interest but you’ve hesitated due to the ubiquitous tales of overhyped recoil, I implore you to reconsider. You need this firearm. Now. The experience is nothing short of glorious. Are you agree with me?

Yes, you are right – it’s awesome! I want to give you advice: when I transition from firing a significant amount of .45 Long Colt rounds, I make it a point to meticulously clean the cylinder before progressing to the .460 caliber. This practice serves as a prudent precaution to ensure optimal performance and safety. Over time, a residue or “crud ring” can accumulate within the cylinder from the shorter .45 cartridge cases. This accumulation has the potential to create an uneven surface inside the cylinder.

As a proud owner of the .460 cartridge, I must admit that I was faced with a significant dilemma when contemplating a potential acquisition of the revered 44 Magnum. However, my proclivity for the .460 ultimately swayed my decision, and I have never looked back. While the .44 Magnum certainly boasts its merits, the .460 offers a realm of possibilities that greatly appealed to my shooting preferences. In essence, my bias as a fervent .460 aficionado is undeniable, and my extensive contemplation between the .460 and 44 Magnum was indeed an enlightening journey. The world of ammunition and firearm modifications continues to unfold with fascinating possibilities, making each shooting experience a thrilling exploration.

I’ve got an itch for one of those heavy hitters, and the allure of the .460 has always held a special place for me. However, there’s no denying that the .500 stands as the undisputed heavyweight in this category. It’s the largest of the bunch, and that sheer raw power is undeniably tempting. So, now I’m faced with a decision: which one should I go for?

In my personal opinion, I find myself more drawn to the .460 S&W than the .500. While I’ve only had the opportunity to fire a few rounds through each during a local exhibition, I noticed that the recoil of the .460 was notably more manageable, allowing me to maintain better accuracy on target. For those who are comfortable with big-bore handguns, the .460 appears to offer a higher level of precision. On the other hand, the .500 seems to be Smith & Wesson’s endeavor to hold onto the title of “most powerful handgun in the world”. It’s clear that the .500 carries a certain appeal for enthusiasts seeking that ultimate power factor. If that’s your preference and you have the financial means to indulge, then the .500 is certainly a choice that won’t disappoint.

I personally own both the .460 S&W and the .500, and I must admit that my preference leans strongly toward the .460. When it comes to recoil, there’s a noticeable step up with the .500, and my shooting sessions usually involve firing around 15 rounds before I start to feel it. On the contrary, I find myself running through approximately 50 rounds with the .460 in a single session. An excellent example of quality ammo that I used is Winchester Super-X Handgun 460 S&W Ammo 250 Grain.

I opted for the .460 primarily due to the fact that the .500 exceeds the limits set by my firearm permission, which caps at 12mm. I haven’t dabbled with .45LC or .454 rounds; the .460 keeps me plenty entertained. For those seeking an authentic power experience, I’d suggest opting for a shorter barrel without the compensator. It’s a surefire way to truly feel the force that the .460 has to offer.
