Reloading 🔩

Reloading ammunition can be an effective way to maintain a steady supply of this popular hunting and shooting round while also allowing for customization.

✅ The first step in the reloading process is to gather all necessary components:

  • Reloading Press
  • Die Set for 300 WSM
  • Brass Cases
  • Primers (appropriate for 300 WSM)
  • Powder (compatible with 300 WSM loads)
  • Bullets (suitable for 300 WSM)
  • Powder Scale
  • Powder Funnel
  • Calipers
  • Shell Holder
  • Case Lube
  • Safety Glasses and Ear Protection

✅ Start by inspecting the brass cases for any visible defects. Then, clean the cases using a tumbler to remove any dirt. Next, the brass needs to be resized using the reloading press and the correct die. This step ensures that the brass will properly fit in the chamber of the firearm. After resizing, the cases are ready for the priming stage. Using the reloading press, replace the old primer with a new one. It’s critical to handle primers with care, as they are sensitive to impact.

✅ The next step is to measure and load the powder. Precision is key here; using a good scale is important to ensure the correct amount of powder is used. Each cartridge has a recommended powder charge, so be sure to check a reloading manual for the appropriate amount for 300 WSM.

✅ Once the powder is loaded, the bullet can be seated. This process is achieved again using the reloading press and a bullet seating die. The goal is to ensure the bullet is seated to the correct depth.

✅ The final step is to crimp the case around the bullet if necessary. Not all ammo requires crimping, but it can help with bullet retention in some cases.

Safety is paramount when reloading any ammunition. Always follow all safety guidelines, wear appropriate protective gear, and work in a well-ventilated, clean, and safe environment. Remember, the quality of your reloading components and tools will significantly impact the performance of your reloaded rounds. The process of reloading can be time-consuming and requires attention to detail, but it provides a rewarding way to engage with the shooting hobby on a deeper level.

FAQ ❓

What size ammo does a 300 WSM use?

🟨 The 300 Winchester Short Magnum uses ammunition that is specifically designed for this cartridge. The most common and standard bullet size for the 300 WSM is .308 inches in diameter, which is the standard bullet size for many other .30 calibre cartridges as well.

🟨 It’s worth noting that bullet weights can vary depending on the specific load and purpose of the ammunition. The 300 WSM can use bullets with a wide range of weights, typically ranging from around 150 grains for lighter bullets used in varmint hunting to over 200 grains for heavier bullets used for big game hunting and long-range shooting.

How to store ammunition properly?

Storing ammunition properly is crucial to maintaining its integrity and ensuring safe handling. Here are some guidelines to follow:

  1. ✳️ Climate-Controlled Environment: Ammunition should be stored in a dry, climate-controlled environment. High humidity can lead to corrosion, and extreme temperatures can degrade the gunpowder.
  2. ✳️ Original Packaging: If possible, store ammunition in its original packaging. It’s designed to protect ammo from physical damage and environmental hazards.
  3. ✳️ Ammo Cans or Containers: For bulk storage, consider using metal or plastic ammo cans. Ensure they are clean, dry, and fitted with a good seal. Desiccant packets can be used to absorb any moisture.

  6. ✳️ Avoid Mixing Different Types: It’s advisable to keep different types of ammunition separate to avoid confusion.

Remember, safety is paramount when dealing with ammunition. Always follow manufacturer recommendations and local laws when storing ammunition.

What is the difference between 6.5 prc vs 300 wsm ammo?

The 6.5 PRC and 300 Winchester Short Magnum are both high-performance big-game cartridges that are popular for long-range hunting and target shooting. They have similar ballistics, but there are some key differences between the two cartridges.

6.5 PRC

  • Smaller calibre, which means less recoil
  • Higher ballistic coefficient (BC), which means the bullet retains more energy and flies flatter
  • Shorter action length, which makes it possible to build lighter rifles
  • More readily available ammunition

300 WSM

  • Larger calibre, which means more energy
  • Slightly flatter trajectory than the 6.5 PRC
  • More forgiving of poor shot placement
  • More widely available rifles

Which cartridge is right for you?

The best cartridge for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a cartridge with less recoil and a flatter trajectory, the 6.5 PRC is a good choice. If you are looking for a cartridge with more energy and a more forgiving shot placement, the 300 WSM is a good choice.

  • Recoil: The 300 WSM can have significant recoil, especially in lighter rifles. This may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who are recoil-sensitive.
  • Cost: This ammo can be more expensive than some other cartridges. This is due to the fact that it is a newer cartridge and there is less competition among manufacturers.
  • Availability: 300 WSM rifles are not as widely available as some other cartridges. This is because the cartridge is newer and not as popular as some other options.
  • Barrel life: It is a high-pressure cartridge, which can shorten the barrel life of a rifle. This means that you may need to replace the barrel more often than with a lower-pressure cartridge.

In my opinion, the 300 WSM is superior for hunting compared to other options. I personally don’t mind the recoil when hunting, but I do find the 300 WSM to be a bit easier on my shoulder compared to the 300 Win Mag.

18 years ago, I bought my son a 300 WSM hunting rifle which made me fall in love with this cartridge. I now own 4 WSMs in different weights and all of them shoot amazingly well. My favorite one is the 180gr, but there’s just something about this cartridge that works perfectly for me.

I have been using the .300wsm for hunting for 19 seasons and have gained a lot of knowledge on this cartridge. I have used it for hunting purposes ranging from rock chucks and yotes to mule deer and moose as it is very accurate and makes me feel like my M70 is a target gun. It took me a year to realize that the screws in my bace were too long but after fixing the issue, I shot a 5 shot group @ 100yrds with 168gr pills that my pinky finger covered the very next day and have been using ever since. The cartridge covers all my North American game needs, ranging from 125gr to 180gr.

As a hunter, I prefer using .300 WSM because I limit my shots to less than 300 yards. It’s important to remember that 300 yards is actually quite a long distance for shooting. We should always use these animals for hunting purposes, not simply as targets.
